Over Sears Franchise Taken by Mr and Mrs Peetz

MR. AND MRS. BURGETT PEETZ become the new operators of the Sears Catalog store in Sidney on February 17, taking over the franchise as authorized Sears sales merchants. Both are longtime Cheyenne County residents with deep ties to local organizations. Mr. Peetz, a Sidney native, serves on the Cheyenne County Fair Board and participates in Knights of Columbus and the Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Peetz, formerly Betty Morey of Gurley, is active in Catholic Daughters of America and home extension work, having chaired county home extension clubs for two years. Their farm southeast of Sidney is run by their son Larry.

Hay Springs to keep high school open amid district reorganization

Hay Springs city schools will stay open next year despite a reorganization drive involving 16 rural districts. Superintendent Edward Reiman says most rural districts favor a Class VI district serving grades 7 through 12 rather than the proposed K-12. The levy stands at 84 mills, threatening a K-9 district without higher valuations, unless state aid rises or rural tuition per student increases from 3.50 to 4.00 per day.
