Prune Before Spring Work Starts
A guide urges pruning trees vines and shrubs during dormancy to prevent spring injuries. Farmers gain winter time to prune before new growth begins, reducing chances of forgotten orchards as spring work commences.
Pruning Guidelines From State College Advice
Freezing and drying out, the State College of Agriculture suggests that where limbs an inch or more in diameter are removed the wounds should be painted with white lead and linseed oil. Painting the wounds keeps out moisture and disease. No two trees are alike, so no fixed pruning rules apply. Keep the tree tops reasonably open for sunlight. Remove dead and diseased limbs, water sprouts, and crowding limbs. Prune smoothly, close to the main branch to ease healing.
