Contractor Jas O Connor directs 115 teams and 165 men on a two mile grading job east of town. A mountain of dirt piles along the Union Pacific track while a 170 foot viaduct and a 70 foot opening near the grade are planned. Completion for south of the viaduct is targeted by end March with overall work ready by June 1.
A large gathering of ladies and gentlemen met in the parlors of Mr and Mrs Charles Peterson for a Council of War to correct programed war dates. Prizes were awarded to Mrs Oberfelder and Mr Oberfelder for best scores with Miss Oberfelder and Mr Pierson as runners up. A lunch followed the event with many couples listed as attendees.
The town reports a church started since the last update and a general boom. Thomas Blackmore and J T White with Cy Duncan visited, coal shipments rise, and depots near completion. Local merchants see healthy trade as residents stock up on coal and hay. Rev Paine from Bayard visits. barber shop opening announced. a doctor and drugstore are still needed.
The County Commissioners meet to reroute the county road east of Sidney to avoid Burlington crossing fill. Burlington’s E T Weatervelt proposes moving the road north to grade cross the tracks. A meeting with the Village Board was planned for Friday evening to discuss options. The board also weighs saloon license Grant decisions for H C Armstrong and Harry Nelson.
Oscar Meyer and Edith Withers were married Monday evening by Judge Sanders in the Globe Hotel parlors at 5 o'clock. The groom, a brother of L M Meyer of Lisco, is known in the county and formerly worked at the Club Ranch. The bride is the daughter of Andrew J Withers and resides north of Lodgepole, respected by friends.

W N Sanford a former timekeeper for Contractor Holmes was arrested Friday night for obtaining money under false pretences. He passed a check at the Kruse saloon for 20 dollars drawn on the Stockgrowers National Bank of Cheyenne claiming funds on deposit. He endorsed a 25 draft with Dan McAleese and used the proceeds to pay Kruse and settle with McAleese, but was released Sunday after funds were raised to cover the draft.
J L Pennington former editor of the Telegraph died in Los Angeles California last week while there to regain his health. He worked briefly for the Telegraph in 1890 after moving from Omaha Bees staff. He married Miss Anna Bradbury of St Louis shortly before moving to Sidney where they gained many friends. His father served as governor for Dakota Territory. He began in Minnesota and later held key roles in newspapers including managing editor of the Denver Republican last year.
The State Journal reports city discussion on raising saloon licenses or adding a $500 occupation tax. Some argue the council ordinance could be struck down if challenged by the school board. Debates center on whether the occupation tax can be enforced through prosecution and how funds would be allocated.

Ed Collard lost a valuable mare last Tuesday after Chad Stickney drove her to Sidney and she died soon after. Frank Lehmkuhl visited Sidney. others report busy ice delivery by Slawson Wilcox Co and goods arriving for C F Mettey. Rube Linco from Rush Creek and W C Bullock and wife attended Sidney events. the Union Pacific traffic is back to normal with William Smith back on the section.
The Burlington Route offers a twelve sheet calendar with a monthly illustration of service and territory. Images include government fast mail, California tourist cart, engine 1591, library car, dining car, monster freight train, and landmarks like Omaha station and Yellowstone Falls. Oscar Pfeiffer of Brooklyn and Chicago attorney McGee conclude Emil Pressler, missing since the Sunol wreck a year ago, is likely among burnt remains found by Coroner Bassett. A watch with the name Preusler inside ties him to the case. Pfeiffer believes a railroad suit may follow.
Cyrus and Andrew Allen enter the Second primary. Room 2 hosts two spelling divisions with the Dewey division winning this week. George and Mabel Rockwell join room 3 as Charlie Roth and Maude Sullivan miss room 8. Exams in all rooms late week and high school program rehearsal tonight. Reading class progresses. patrons are invited to visit. Viola Twist fainted but recovered. Mrs. Twist took her home.

A group of Katharine Sharmer’s friends surprised her by gathering at the Sharmer residence Friday around 7:30 p.m. They played games, had lunch, and enjoyed a merry evening until late. Participants included Annie Radcliff Fannie Bergman Blanch Pierson Hattie Radcliff Maggie Nelson Clarabelle Oberfelder Howard Pierson Clayton Radcliff Beyil Kelley Fred King Arthur Oberfelder Harry King and Everett Sanders.
William Davis known as Uncle Billy died Thursday February 22 at 4 am in Sidney after about a month illness from enteritis. Born November 9 1825 in England, he lived in New York and Michigan before Civil War service with Co B 16th New York Artillery. He later farmed in Sidney and ran a livery business. Surviving children: Wm J Henry H Samuel Steven Marshall Davis of Sidney George Davis Wright Co Iowa Mrs Emma Moore Emmettsburg Iowa Mrs Lydia McGinnis Madison Neb Mrs Annie Ottoway South Bend Wyo and Miss Lottie Davis Fremont Neb. Funeral at the Methodist church Friday at ten with Rev W L Austin. G A R in attendance.
