The region sees a sharp cooldown after a high of 57 for Saturday with a small rain and snow mix. By Sunday temps fall to 15. by today, 20 to 30 degrees. Scottsbluff Weather Bureau forecasts 1 to 3 inches of snow with strong northerly winds and drifting, cold throughout the week with periodic snowfalls.
Farmers Union Cooperative Gas and Oil Co announces awarding of a new fertilizer blending plant contract to Nienhaeser Construction Co of Sidney and a machinery contract to A. Brown Co of Denver. The plant on the Union Pacific Railroad right of way east of town will store and blend bulk fertilizers for area farmers, with capacity around 500 tons and sixty tons per hour blending. Completion around April 1, weather permitting. A liquid bulk plant will move to the site, providing bulk liquid and dry blended products tailored to soil tests, with a bulk spreader service to save time and money. The project promises about five dollars saved per ton by delivering to farms in bulk.
Enrollment for initial classes at the Business Institute of Sidney proceeds smoothly says managing director Howard Lile. Most students join the first June class with a few opting for September starts as the school offers secretarial stenographic higher accounting business administration junior accounting office machines shorthand clerk typist and the Nancy Taylor charm and modeling course. The Nancy Taylor program promises free lifetime coast to coast placement in 441 cities for graduates. The Sidney school is owned by Draughon’s College of Kansas City Missouri, a 40 year record of service, and requests inquiries at P O Box 101 Sidney Nebraska.
Nebraska residents must file personal property tax schedules with their county by midnight March 1 1965. The same date marks the deadline for obtaining 1965 vehicle license plates.
Snow begins this afternoon and lingers tonight with strong north winds causing drifting snow. Local accumulations of one to three inches expected. Snow ends Tuesday morning then turns fair and cold. Lows tonight 10 to 20, highs Tuesday 15 to 25. Five day outlook shows temperatures 3 to 12 degrees below normal with frequent day to day changes and highs in the 30s, lows 5 to 15, frequent snows through the week.
Oil and Gas Journal predicts Nebraska oil exploration will level off in 1965 with 448 new drilling ventures, down from 461 in 1964 and far below 1961’s 1,005 wells. Recoverable crude oil reserves fall to 13 million barrels as 1964 output reaches 19.116 million, while proved reserves on Jan 1 1965 total 152 million barrels. Kimbark Exploration will reexamine No 1 Clifford Webster in Cheyenne County with a washdown to detect overlooked reserves from Marathon Oil’s prior work.
Fireman Laurance W. Rowley, USN, son of Mr and Mrs Albert H Rowley of 518 Beverly Drive Sidney, served aboard USS Coral Sea CVA 43 during retaliatory air strikes on North Viet Nam on February 7. Carrier aircraft from Coral Sea Ranger and Hancock attacked near Dong Hoi, reported heavy fires and damage to military targets in the area.
Lincoln to Benkelman readers can tour the capitol from home using 35mm color slides from the Game Commission. A 33-slide set captured by the commission staff, highlighting murals and tile work, costs $10 and is available through the Lincoln offices. Individual slides are 35 cents each or three slides for $1.
Leo Krieger of the Nebraska Industrial Foundation attended the Lincoln seminar on industrial development. Speakers stressed guiding Nebraskans to approach industry for locating new plants. Reisler of Fantas Co. cited transport costs, service gaps, limited unemployment, and need for state catalyst and local initiative, citing Norfolk as a model.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce hosts a joint Western Nebraska United Chambers of Commerce meeting at Ft Sidney Motor Hotel on Thursday March 11. WMCC guests will be hosted by the Sidney civic club as directors meet earlier. details to come.
The 1964 United Fund in Sidney failed to meet its goal. Directors set a $17,125 target but collected only $13,235. They credit many phone calls and personal visits. An annual meeting is set for March 10 at 7 30 p.m. with location to be announced. Three directors’ terms expire: Benny Hochman Dale Kinney and Mrs Ralph Welch.
The best x ray survey unit is to visit Cheyenne County from March 30 to April 9 under Dr. Del Kochm, Cheyenne County TB Association chairman. Details of the schedule will be announced later.
Sidney High School senior Gary Boye won the District American Legion Oratorical Contest at Gurley School gym. He will represent the Western Nebraska District at the state competition March 13 in Norfolk. Second place was Mike Janda, third Steve Gilliand. other contestants included Cynthia Dyer, Maxine Sorge, Michael Midgley, and Steve Davis.
Congressman Dave Martin of Nebraska urges higher basic support prices for wheat and feed grains to counter farm income losses. He seeks higher CCC release prices to curb market dumping, arguing farm income must rise despite federal program reforms. He spoke after traveling central Nebraska, meeting over 1,000 small town farmers and businessmen and noting wage concerns.
Two Gurley men escaped with minor injuries when a 1956 Ford pickup left the viaduct at the junction of Highways 30 and 385 near Sidney, struck the east guard rail, and plunged into a draw. Driver Paul E. Poeschke, 25, and his brother Virgil, 37, remained in the wreck as the vehicle toppled. No other injuries were reported in a weekend of crashes recorded by Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Paul Manley and Trooper Bob Cook.
The Sidney city council meets to authorize a new public library bid call after Architect Howard Duncan revises plans to meet cost estimates. Officials also hear a transfer request for the Sidney cable system and consider liquor license changes at the Elks Lodge with Charles Lafler named manager of the clubrooms.
Cliff Davison, Sund farmer, is reported improving after facial injuries from a car tractor crash last week. He is at Memorial Hospital. His son Lynn, a University of Nebraska student, and his parents Mr and Mrs Willis Davison of Champion spent the weekend at his home.
Two weekend traffic incidents reported with no injuries. At 6:45 p m Friday on 23rd Avenue a 1962 Chevrolet backed into a parked 1962 Pontiac causing about 45 dollars damage. The other crash at Elm and 19th involved a 1961 Ford and a 1953 Ford with no damage totals listed.
