Inland Construction Co offers to pave outdoor basketball areas in Sidney at no cost. A 20 by 20 asphalt mat would be laid at multiple city sites with free throw lanes marked. The plan, supported by the recreation committee, hinges on local clubs funding posts nets and goals.
Helen Cornelia Snyder Armstrong died at 85 after 47 years in Sidney. She lived in Rose New York before 1910, married Harrison K. Armstrong in New York, moved to Sidney where he worked for farming and Union Pacific. Funeral Monday at 2:30 p.m. Gehrig and Son, burial Greenwood Cemetery beside her husband. She leaves five daughters, one son, 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and a sister.
A local non profit little theater group in Sidney schedules an organizational meeting for Monday March 4 at 8 p m in the Sidney Junior High School Cafeteria. An interim committee drafted a tentative constitution and all attendees will become charter members. A production is planned around Ft Sidney Days in mid June.

Three youths named on six charges in the Oct. 28 1956 Ordville apartment break-in and robbery of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hernandez. Simon Rivera Jr of Ordville and David Padilla and Leo Rivera of Sterling charged with breaking and entering and malicious destruction. Padilla 18 and Leo Rivera 21 pleaded guilty at arraignment before Judge C W Smith. Ribera 24 claimed innocence with hearing set for next Monday. Quantities of clothing and food stolen and property destruction reported after an attack on Hernandez in Sidney early morning.
A second wash house theft within a week was reported at Porter's Trailer Court where coin boxes in the communal laundry were robbed of about 25 dollars. Police connect the method to an earlier incident at Srater City, east of Sidney, with a similar amount taken.
Sioux Villa residents will begin paying their own electric bills next month after meters are read and first bills issued in March. City Manager Murrey Fuller said the Housing Authority office will handle deposits and bill payments. The city’s electric department will sell power to the Housing Authority at commercial rates, then resell to tenants at residential rates.
Dog tags for 1957 are heart shaped and on sale at the Sidney Police Station. Price is 25 cents with proof of rabies and distemper shots. Unlicensed dogs are considered wanted and may be picked up and destroyed if not claimed within the required period.
Cheyenne County voters head to caucuses in Lodgepole Potter and Gurley to nominate candidates for village and school board seats. Dalton and Gurley hold separate village and school sessions with terms ending for trustees and directors.
The Kimball Chamber challenges Sidney to show cause why the oil capital of Nebraska should not move from Sidney to Kimball. Ralph Welch of Sidney responds that an answer will be given. Kimball County has outpaced Cheyenne in oil activity, though Sidney members question value standards.
Cheyenne County Fair Board approved major projects with 4-H clubs volunteering. Plans include a new 26 by 96 foot livestock barn for 48 cattle, moving the 4-H building east of its current site, converting the Merchants Building into an all purpose facility, and reshingling the Swine Barn. Bids for materials will be sought next month and one supervisor will oversee the construction.
Sidney population signs will be posted at city entrances. M R Sigler, Sidney Chamber of Commerce manager, said the chamber will seek state highway department cooperation to update Sidney's figure from 4,950 to a higher estimate based on oil growth. He noted current calculations from water meters and phone hookups place Sidney between 8,800 and 8,900 residents.

Cheyenne County Commissioners plan to purchase three new two ton trucks with hydraulic dump bodies for the county highway department. County Clerk I L Pindell was directed to draft specifications and bids will be opened at 2 p m Tuesday March 5. Trade ins include two 1953 models and one 1952 model.
The red brick Nebraska National Guard armory in Sidney will be officially dedicated tomorrow from 3 to 4 pm with an open hour afterward. Maj Gen Warren Wood and Maj Gen Guy Henninger headline a lineup that includes Col William F Bachman Lt Col Hans Holtorf Jr Lt Col Richard F McNamara A A Fenske and Ralph Welch. A Woodman of the World flag presentation Rev Townsend and Rev Albel will participate and the Sidney High School Band will perform.
Two Cheyenne County wells near the normal pay sands expected to reach target zones this weekend. Kimball County reports seven milers, a wildcat discovery and six producers making this the best week of the year for oil in the county. Completion tests show multiple producers and several dry holes across Heideman, Cross-State, and Indian Springs fields.
National FFA Week runs February 16 to 23 with Potter FFA members showcasing displays in school and local businesses. The Potter chapter, chartered in 1954 with 28 members, notes officers Tom Dindinger, Wesley Moench, Francis Van Raay, John Lovell, Russell Langley, Harvey Jung, Louis A. Piva, Frank Holliday.
Kenneth Morgan, 20, Sterling, pleaded guilty to petit larceny after stealing four hub caps from a car parked outside Rail's Cafe on Hickory Street in Sidney. Officers said the theft occurred about 4 30 p.m. Wednesday and the car belonged to George Hunt of Sund. The $100 fine was among the harshest for petit larceny Judge Smith has imposed, who said the act should deter others.
