Fertilizer Costs Seen Rising for Spring Planting
ASCS chief Lawrence Thompson says farmers may pay 10 to 15 percent more for fertilizer this spring than fall 1974 prices. USDA ERS notes 1974 saw tight supplies but record usage at 47 million tons, with 360 million fertilized acres and 91 pounds of primary nutrients per acre. Ammonia and nitrogen fertilizers may rise 10 to 15 percent, linked to corn acreage and demand. Urea remains hard to price and is used in feed and industry.
