The Consumers Oil station at Peetz was entered between Saturday and Monday, the safe opened and $150 stolen. Sheriff’s office reports a lack of clues. A window was pried, the combination knocked off, and intruder exited. In Sidney, Sheriff Nelson and Richard Carlson were fatally and critically wounded respectively. Tompsett, an escaped Hastings inmate, was captured after an armed chase. Carlson and Nelson were treated. Nelson gravely injured with two head wounds. Carlson survived a long operation but faced critical injuries. Witness W E Spearow described the shooting as posse hunted the maniac.
