State Wheat Men Would Load Ships

Directors of the Nebraska Wyoming Wheat Growers Association voted to offer services to load wheat on ships tied up by a strike at gulf ports. More than 100 farmers offered transport to the gulf and to bring shovels to relieve the situation until the strike ends. The president said losses run to 1.5 to 2 million bushels daily, impacting exports prices and the balance of payments. Farmers would work at the old wage scale and donate half their wages to the union. The National Wheat Growers Assn estimated about 500 ships idle, with some sales canceled, including a 750 million bushel shipment to Colombia.
