Chadron Nebraska the chamber of commerce voted to empower the board of directors to hire a full time paid secretary. One proposal suggested a veteran hired under on the job training with government paying part and the chamber covering trainee salary. The board will work out details.
Scottsbluff county 4-H groups will select a king and queen for the fall county achievement banquet. Contestants are chosen by project club participation character and cooperation. Final selection rests with the county committee. Demonstration day and leaders' picnic are planned with potential joint 1946 judging days.
Gering Volunteer Fire Department has ordered a rural fire truck to combat country fires. The fundraising total reached 4100 dollars with 900 still needed, and many have not been solicited. Donors are asked to leave checks at Probs Bros or with Lloyd Smith at Ted Miller's. funds will be cashed today or tomorrow.
Scottsbluff Republican leader A T Bert Howard of Scottsbluff is highlighted as the first western Nebraskan mentioned for the 1947 gubernatorial race. The report notes a Howard for Governor boom following the annual founders day meeting.

J ensens sales start today at their farm three fourths mile north of Gurley on the east side of the road at eleven o'clock with Col. A B Rapp as auctioneer and bank clerk. The Telegraph notes additional sales including a machinery auction at Sidney Livestock Commission Co on Thursday February 28, with ads to appear Friday, and the W C Sheets sale on March 6 with ads March 1. Rapp also lists for his annual March machinery sale, ads to run in The Telegraph.
The Federal Housing Administration insured 344 home loans for 713 892 dollars in Cheyenne county through June 30, per Holger Holm state director. Loans included 159 Title I loans totaling 60 842 dollars, 38 small mortgage Title II 115 600 dollars, and 147 war housing Title VI 537 450 dollars. Nebraska totals show 41 652 loans for 58 550 791 dollars.
A jury term of district court opened with Judge J L Tewell presiding. The first jury case is a replevin suit Leo Jessen v Peter J Walia. A non jury judgment action Charles E Grantham v M W Osborn will be followed by a damage suit Evelyn Ross v E L Uptegrove over her husband John Ross’s death in a building fall.
A two day survey begins this week to inspect Boy Scout camping sites in the Wyo Braska area. Carl Ziegler and Vergal Winn of Sidney will serve on the selection committee. The survey covers eastern Wyoming western Nebraska and the Black Hills section of South Dakota. Ziegler Cheyenne District Scout Commissioner and Scout Outfit ter for this region. Winn Troop 90 Scoutmaster and Camping Activities Director for the Wye Braska Council camps. The plan is to pick one or two camping spots to improve for more or less permanent camping locations. Previously about five temporary camps were used during the war emergency period when distance to camp mattered. The survey is set to begin Wednesday.
Sidney hosts a gathering of managers and directors from Cheyenne and Kimball counties cooperatives at the county judge's office in the courthouse on Wednesday February 20. Lloyd Sherman of Omaha will speak on the Nebraska Cooperative Council and the benefits of forming it.
The Boy Scout group hosts the first annual Father-Son banquet at St Patrick's Auditorium this Thursday evening February 21. An advance ticket sale ensures enough plates for all attending boys and sponsors are urged for men without sons to support attendance.
The Civil Aeronautics Authority provided contour maps of two survey sites for a new airport. W. J. Robinson and the airport committee will review which site to acquire. North site grading and runway work would cost about 42000 dollars. south site about 70000 dollars. No federal funds are available now, but appropriations are expected. The chamber may seek a bond issue or municipal funds if a definite site is chosen.
Western Nebraska basketball headliner tonight features Scottsbluff hosting Sidney with a six point deficit from earlier this season at stake. Bearcats sit among Nebraska Class A leaders while Sidney trails in Class B. Coaches praise each other’s teams as a brilliant clash looms in the enemy gym.
The public especially farmers and families are invited to a free program at the Legion rooms in the city auditorium Thursday at 2 15. Made in America, an all color film produced by Minneapolis Morine Power Implement Co, will be shown under the sponsorship of Foland Farm Machinery Co and local M M dealers. Coffee and doughnuts will be served and three free awards given. The film depicts fighting men and machines pushing the enemy back and returning home.
Mayor D R Thomas said FHA officials favor city operation of Sioux Villa and would like a Chicago meeting. He preferred continuing via letter until a definite plan is ready for discussion.
The city council postponed its regular meeting to next Friday to ensure full attendance. Two issues were slated for discussion: reducing steam heating rates and hiring a city fact finder to serve as both city employee and chamber of commerce secretary. action was not taken due to absence of full membership.
Wayne Hansen of Oak Park Illinois arrives Thursday night as the second speaker in Rotary’s public institute. A world traveler and lecturer, he has visited 37 countries and worked for better understanding among peoples. He helped reorganize Franco-American Foyers in Paris after World War I and earned the Greek Order of Redeemer.
Rudy Munderloh says Gurley grocery will transfer to Harvey Feldman who served in the army air corps. Feldman plans to keep the name Corner Grocery while Munderloh and Clifford Jensen prepare to build a new supermarket and locker plant in Sidney and begin construction at once.

Nebraska trackmen beat Iowa State 57 to 47 for their third straight dual win. Dean Kratz, a former Sidney athlete, posted 2 00.9 in the 880 yard dash, Jim Alexander of Iowa State ran 51.9 in the 440, and Dwayne Feeken also of Iowa State leaped six feet in the high jump to set a new mark.
Rex Carey, a Dalton businessman and farmer, filed yesterday as a Democratic candidate for the county commissioner in the second district. His filing makes him the third candidate for the office vacated by Guy Shaw, with James Sparks on the Democratic ticket and Lee Gain running as a Republican candidate.
Potter resident Geo Thirwall dies in a Sidney hospital after a long illness at about age 75. Born in England he came to the United States over thirty years ago and worked for local merchants before becoming a newspaper agent. Funeral set for 2:30 P. M. Wednesday at the Potter Methodist Church with arrangements incomplete.
Sixty five Rotarians Rotary Anns and guests attended the annual Ladies Night at the country club. Master of Ceremonies J K Mahr led rapid fire stunts. Induction of baby members featured milk drinking contests won by Rae Jones. Awards went to Leon Fine and Mrs John Elwell as most friendly. Harold Craig earned top score as perfect liar after a character test.
Navy recruiters announce visit times in western Nebraska with Sidney on Tuesdays 12 to 5 at the Post Office Building Bridgeport Wednesdays 12 to 4 in the Courthouse basement Alliance Thursdays 9 to 12 on the Post Office Building second floor This schedule lists locations and times for outreach in the three towns with specified venues.
Lockwood's Jewelry Store is closed this week for moving from the former USO building to the new location at 940 Tenth Avenue. Owner Mr. Lockwood expects reopening by next Saturday February 23 after extensive remodeling acquired from Mrs. Rose McIntosh.

Mrs Dye of Englewood Colorado will be honored on her 94th birthday with special selections by the Olinger Quartette over KLZ Denver at 9 a m on the Olinger program. A pioneer of western Nebraska she homesteaded 25 miles west of Sidney nearly 65 years ago and has since lived in Englewood. Though nearly blind she remains active in church work and in the W C T U receiving flowers on her birthday.
George N. Phillips resigned as manager of Pine Bluffs Rural Electric Co amid an REA dispute. The REA ordered funds frozen until a new manager is installed. Phillips sought to resist the ouster, backed by the board, while a successor was designated by REA. Construction aims include 125 miles of line north of Potter and Dix, with potential energy from a Washington-approved plan and possible extension of the high line to Sidney via the reclamation service.
