Council unanimously repealed an ordinance that would have permitted beer service in pool halls and bowling alleys though not yet effective. A 285 sign petition urged rescission. Other petitions urged Union Pacific crossing, kitchen upgrades, and higher police judge pay with a committee to study.

The city bought two new Ford police cars after bids from five local dealers. Joe A. Nebraska Wheat Growers Association will hold its third annual convention in Sidney during the first week of December 1956. The board met in Ogallala and chose Sidney after bids from Omaha Lincoln Scottsbluff and North Platte. A special committee led by J Fred Thompson will decide the national convention site while an intensive 30 day drive aims to add 1000 members to reach a 2250 member total.

Rural survey to be taken in Sidney area
A needs survey and census of the Sidney rural area will begin soon, conducted by Cheyenne County Rural Youth for the Sidney Community Improvement Project. The survey mirrors this year and last year’s efforts to map population patterns and community needs. Frank Mattoo will lead the recreational committee with Dr. C. B. Dorwart as assistant, and Mrs. LeBaron Goodwin will chair the cultural committee. Betty Knicely will work with her. other chairs for esthetic and economic committees to be named. A March workshop will include University of Nebraska leaders.

Alfred Banks, 19, of Sidney, already bound over for district court on grand larceny, was bound over again on a breaking and entering charge. He posted $1,000 bond in the larceny case and $3,000 in Kimball County, tied to copper wire theft from Sidney and Kimball power plants. A January 26 Crosby farm robbery led to the breaking and entering accusation. A 16-year-old co defendant testified in the hearing.
