A Sidney Nebraska delegation met Sterling chamber leaders to discuss boosting regional trade via a north south highway. Talks covered road improvements from Sidney through Peetz to Sterling and onward to Denver, plus cooperation to attract tourist travel from the Black Hills corridor.
The Sidney post of the American Legion sets its monthly meeting for next Tuesday night February 19 to decide on a county war memorial. Following night the Sidney Auxiliary and Potter Legion post travel to Lodge Pole to hear each post's memorial choice, with a Saxophone Octet from Sidney and Juvenile Band performances, to aid defrayed costs of the project.
Public school pupils across grades are listed for the third six weeks. Top averages include Edith Martin and Edith Oldershaw in sixth grade, Ruth Baker and Kathryn King in senior class, Emma Wiessman and Viola Foster among sophomores, and multiple pupils in seventh and eighth grades with high marks.
Four cars of hogs were shipped from Sidney by the Cheyenne County Co Operative Shipping association led by Secretary Treasurer William Gross. One car went Monday this week, two cars the preceding Monday, and another car earlier. All trains went to the Farmers Union Livestock Commission in Denver. Fritz Brauer manages the association. profits exceed current market prices due to cooperative efforts. Dr. Taylor reports the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. James N. Walker, southwest of Sidney, on February 9.
Tin Dimery Paul Martin Judge Joseph Oberfelder Simon Fishman Edward Medfernon DD Slayter Perry Coler and Al Jorgenson are listed as participants or witnesses in recent court and civic records. The brief item notes their involvement across multiple cases and hearings, reflecting active legal and municipal proceedings.
Sidney adopts a uniform system for displaying national colors on patriotic days with seventy seven merchants participating. Flags on twelve foot staffs are installed in sidewalk sockets along Central avenue and Second street, sponsored by the American Legion and a Shenandoah Iowa firm.
The Sidney Shrine Saxophone band presents a thirty minute program titled The Rehearsal at the U S A theatre next Thursday night February 21. It accompanies Buster Keaton's Our Hospitality with novelty sketches and musical numbers. An Oriental dance by Chukita and a fashion show are included. The event replaces the regular Shrine party with a monthly club gathering planned for the year.
Lincoln poultry specialist O N Summers will visit the county on the 19th and 20th for four meetings. He opens at 9:30 a.m. near Carl Mahr’s farm south of Sidney, then 2:30 p.m. at the George Worth farm west of Dalton. The next day he tours Lodge Pole area starting 10 a.m. at H H Mayer farm near Lodge Pole, followed by 2:30 p.m. at J H Campbell farm north of Lodge Pole.
Fire Chief Sol Willis notes 1925 losses in Sidney totaled 200 dollars, far below 4,776 dollars in 1922. Only one fire last year was greater than 1922’s total, Tobin carpenter shop burned without insurance. Five other calls yielded losses under 5 dollars each. 1922 had seven calls totaling 4,776 dollars, with 4,525 dollars in insurances, leaving net losses around 200 dollars for both years.
Dr. L G Simon of Denver spent the first of the week in Sidney on business.
Last week Principal Jones surveyed Sidney high school pupils on their life work. One vocation was chosen by many, with sales and other common roles repeated. The tally shows a mix of professions including actor, aviator, teacher, engineer, journalist, architect, and various trades, with several opting for university study and a notable number wishing to pursue stenography.
Seventh and eighth graders presented an Abraham Lincoln themed program noted as highly appreciated. Highlights included Dred Scott decision dramatization with five blackened boys in bright colors, Old Kentucky Home pantomime, and a First Day at School comedy drawing strong audience applause. Rev Toink commended the students and a Teap Year program is promised for February 29 with details in next issue.
The Cheyenne County poor farm proposition to issue 20000 of bonds will be submitted to a vote of the people at the primary election April 8. Petitions calling for a vote on the poor farm bond issue were presented to the county commissioners at the special meeting Thursday morning of this week.
The Sidney chamber of commerce committee returns to decide park site amid proposals. Judge Oberfelder offers a site on the north hill free. Charles Hornaday backs Rose Street foot. I BE Grabill would sell land near Lodge Pole Creek bridge. Lincoln Highway site urged by others. A chamber referendum proposed. Paul L. Martin named next week's chairman. meeting presided by W J Shoemaker. Visitors included Lincoln Frost and Mr McClenahan who praised Sidney pool halls.
Large Burlington railroad loadings show 491 cars of grain from February 1 to 6, up from 89 the previous year. The mix now includes corn, wheat, rye, barley and oats with corn shipments predominating. Farmers embrace diversified farming, aided by cream checks funding groceries and other costs. One Cheyenne County farmer raised 4,000 bushels of corn and 1,800 of wheat with other grains and forage.
The two Union Pacific pay checks stolen from John Deros east of Sidney on January 24 were cashed in Denver four days later. Investigations in Denver failed. Two Mexicans held as suspects in Boottstuff were released when Deros could not positively identify them. Deros was robbed in daylight, bound, with $1000 plus in postal certificates, his watch, and $20 in cash taken. certificates payments stopped. Hard to capture highwaymen due to identification issues.
FE McLernon a Sidney pioneer now in Portland Oregon arrived Friday and will spend most of the year in Sidney tending his land and farming interests. He expects to start cattle feeding this year purchasing 75 to 150 head of steers by early May and grazing them east of Sidney.
Sidney high school basketball trips to Chadron for the Tri State tournament in class A. Coach Green leads eight players including Roy Chambers captain and guard Curtis Jolliff to face thirty western Nebraska, southwestern South Dakota and eastern Wyoming schools, with potential for four or more games. Sidney lost to Alliance 14 to 9 last Friday but won last season’s Chadron title, ending Alliance’s prior dominance.
The Modern Woodmen of America initiation starts at 7 30 p m Friday at Hardy hall. The Royal Neighbors of America initiation follows at 7 30 p m in the Odd Fellows hall. A banquet will be held afterward at Daniels restaurant.
