Ansley Farmer Turns Waste Into Mini-Haystacks With Harvester
Ansley farmers Bill and Arthur Anderson unveil a $2300 harvester that collects shucklage after shelling corn and packs it into mini-haystacks. The shucklage is used as cattle bedding and a hay extender, mixing with 20 tons of shucklage and 30 tons of hay. The system, tested on grain crops, allows cattle to be turned onto the field after harvesting. The Andersons winter 500 calves for Bob Valentine and plan to expand use beyond corn to wheat oats barley and rye.
