Government observers report top soils drying in Nebraska as spring winds threaten erosion. Wheat and rye remain in good condition with some greening in southern counties. Feed grain and hay supplies are adequate. livestock conditions are good.
The Nebraska Department of Roads reports its design for the I 80 segment between Sunol and Sidney is ready for federal approval. A November design hearing drew no appointment requests, and federal consent is needed to proceed with further design and funding, though no construction is planned in the Sidney Sunol section in the next year.
The city bought 25.3 acres north of the cemetery at 100 dollars per acre for future cemetery use, plus a 45 foot strip on Hickory Street with coal sheds removed for potential power plant expansion or public parking. It also acquired 14 acres east of the cemetery, deemed unsuitable for expansion, and a 10 thousand dollar parcel near 11th to 12th Avenues. Franchise renewal and a youth camp project were also discussed.
Funeral services for Lee G. Houtby 67 will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. The rosary is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in charge. Memorial Hospital is named for memorials.
The Burlington Railroad asks the State Railway Commission for permission to relocate the Dalton depot to Gurley. The filing hints Gurley’s depot may be razed or moved, notes prior approvals to merge agencies and discontinue Dalton services, and cites cost savings. Notifications will go to local officials and groups if a hearing is needed.
Gov. Norbert Tiemann and 12 department officials will attend a town hall meeting in Alliance at 7:30 p m. Sponsored by the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce the event will be held at Alliance Municipal Building.
Cheyenne County Sheriff Kermit Brumbaugh found 50 pounds of dynamite in an abandoned car three miles north of Sidney and nearby a shed yielded 1,000 pounds of Buckley Powder Company explosive. Fort Carson demolition officers disposed of the dynamite by burning it at the Sidney city dump Friday night.
Cheyenne County officials and Senator Bob Clark attended a Panhandle County Officials workshop in Scottsbluff led by Merle McNeil to discuss new tax provisions and homestead exemptions. Tuesday’s quarterly session featured Senator Terry Carpenter discussing recent unicameral bills and budgeting changes for local governments.
Alva Hart, 90, longtime resident of Cheyenne County, died Monday evening at Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the First Christian Church with Rev. Ellis Wotan officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Hart was born February 2, 1880 in Elkhead Missouri. He lived near Sidney before moving to the city in 1848. He was married to Nancy Douglas Gilliam in 1914 and survived by four children, three grandchildren, three great-grandsons, and a sister. He was a member of the Christian Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge. The Craig-Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials to the First Christian Church or the Heart Fund.
Scottsbluff city council directed City Attorney Loren Olsson to pursue district court action against Kansas Nebraska Gas Co over a retail gas rate dispute. The move follows a Sidney case decision, with officials noting unresolved issues that may merit early litigation rather than waiting for higher court rulings. The city also reported a 6.97 percent rate increase approved for Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co general service customers in the Gerling system to cover a $573,699 revenue deficit.
Funeral services for Jacob A. Vogt 82 of Dalton will be at 10 a m Thursday at St Marys Church Dalton with Rev Cletus Semper presiding. Burial follows in Dalton Cemetery. Rosary is at 3 p m Wednesday at St Marys. Burial arrangements handled by Gehrig and Son. Vogt born May 29 1887 in Russia. immigrated 1900. married Anna Grendler Feb 22 1909 Petersburg Neb. They moved to Dalton in 1919. survived by son Joseph Scottsbluff daughter Frances Sylaart Vancouver Wash five grandchildren five great grandchildren.
Mrs. Loret ta James was honored Monday at Memorial Hospital for 44 years in nursing. The West Wing supervisor marked her final day as a fulltime nurse after a long career beginning in 1955.
The Professional Rights and Responsibilities Committee recommended changes to the handbook. Werdell Lessman chaired the committee and the board approved two recommendations including clarifying membership in professional organizations and attendance at general teachers' meetings.
Coach Hank Reitz presented 13 items from coaches to upgrade the athletic and intramural program. Proposals include more staff, coaching assignments, facility improvements, and a girls' athletic program at an initial cost around 4000 dollars. The board will review each item, noting expansion is limited by current facilities.
The board directs Superintendent Pedersen to obtain cost estimates for a disability income protection plan for teachers with 30 60 or 90 day waiting periods to age 65. They consider elementary teacher aides and scheduling changes for planning periods while preparing bid specifications. Jack Knicely to attend national school board convention in April with Pedersen. They approve Veterans Day observance next fall and discuss raising elementary lunch price to 35 cents. An executive session on Feb 23 with principals will chart a fall direction for the continuous education program.
Supt Pedersen outlined Nixon veto effects on HEW funded programs, noting losses in Title II library materials and Title III science equipment for vocational education. Five year plan requested 56,800 then 126,000 yearly, with about 60,000 for three later years, prompting district 166 debate and policy updates on fundraising and retirement age for staff.
