Grinder Safety Warns Nebraska Farmers
Lincoln reports from Rollin Schnieder, University of Nebraska Extension safety specialist, warn grinder and pelleting equipment pose serious hazards. In 1966, 22 Nebraskans were injured and two killed by grinder accidents, with most incidents from getting caught in the grinding mechanism or PTO shaft. Schnieder notes many accidents occur in the first four months of the year and advocates keeping hands clear and shielding. He also notes four of six suffocation deaths last year occurred on farms. The piece adds 1965 US farm figures: nearly 3.4 million farms, cash receipts $41.6 billion, net farm income $14.2 billion, $4,210 per farm, with 14.8 percent of farms earning $20,000+ and accounting for 63.8 percent of receipts.
