Testing Seed Corn in Cold Weather for Planting Success
Farmers assess seed corn quality during freezing temperatures by selecting ears with healthy kernels and conducting a germination test. Take two kernels from each ear, place 100 kernels on a moist blotter, cover, and keep at 60 to 80 degrees for a week. If 95 percent germinate and 90 percent sprouts are strong, the seed is satisfactory.
No Increase Planned for Nebraska Prohibition Agents
A Washington press dispatch says the federal prohibition bureau will not add agents in Nebraska despite a 24 million enforcement appropriation. Officials say the Nebraska force remains small and cannot be expanded until civil service certifies eligibles. The 15th district has 24 agents, mainly in Kansas, with Nebraska and Oklahoma also in the zone. Dr James M Doran notes nationwide growth could occur if funds are used.
