The state department sends a semi annual apportionment of 2573.23 dollars plus 985.56 dollars locally for fines and licenses, totaling 3558.73 dollars to be divided among 63 districts that meet requirements. There are 73 districts in the county, but nine are not eligible for this division.
Last Thursday authorities were alerted to a man found in a shack behind the Nelson property. The insanity commission selected to handle the case said he needed care and a bath, with frostbitten feet and no stove or proper bedding. He had animal skins for warmth and gave the name John Mutt.
H E Gould of Harlan County is named county agent for the Farm Bureau with a $1800 salary split $1200 from the Federal government and $600 from the county. He will have an office in the courthouse and make Saturdays his office day while spending other days in the field assisting farmers and building cooperation.
At a Sidney meeting of the Farm Bureau Directors on January 24, it was decided to carry on Cheyenne County Junior Home Projects during the coming summer. The County Club leader will be hired to devote full time to the boys and girls. The bureau aims to enlist all youths not otherwise engaged in productive labor to join a project and help produce food for the war effort.
Citizens are urged to donate funds to fill Comfort Kits for soldiers. A single donor can sponsor one kit, tying the giver to the recipient. Contributions are received by Mrs. W. P. Miles, chair of the Kit Committee, to support the home front effort.
A report issued by District Chairman C M Matheny of Scottsbluff details the High School Y M C A War Fund for District No. 18 Nebraska. It lists subscriptions and payments by towns including Sidney, Bridgeport, Chappell, Gering, Hemingford, Kimball, Lodgepole, Mitchell, Morrill, Potter, Scottsbluff and Morrill with totals and per town payments.
Senator Hammond will address the community at Tobin's Opera House on Thursday February 7 at 7 30 P M. He arrives as an eye witness to conditions in France and Belgium and speaks on war area realities. The event is organized by the Business Men's Club and the Red Cross inviting readers from surrounding towns.
The Local Board received late war department information noting two items of first interest. Registrants may induct themselves into service by notifying the Local Board and receiving instructions, with the same rating as volunteers. A unit pay of 30 cents per completed registrant is established for each Board, to be shared among members by vote. Cheyenne County Local Board has not claimed pay. the board could claim $90 for 900 registrants if desired.
The Cheyenne County fuel administrator J M Swenson led a Wednesday coal saving drive at Cheyenne schools. Students and adults canvassed districts with captains Maurice Roach Clark Wooldridge Earl Spiller Beulah Grabill directing efforts. Despite severe weather the campaign urged ongoing sacrifice and the message to save coal to ease nationwide strain.
The assignee's sale of the Harry Scott goods and chattels in the National Cafe was conducted a Tuesday morning by Sheriff Jess Sitton. The furniture and fixtures were purchased by a Japanese firm who have leased the cafe and will reopen it in the near future.
