Tobin's statistics show Sidney's five year building total reaching 13 million with nearly 700 homes added since 1950. The 1954 year totals include 212 new dwellings in 1953, 201 in 1952, and 133 in 1951, signaling continued strong housing demand and potential for the coming year to become the city’s largest building year, possibly surpassing 1953's 3,283,320.
Sidney merchants sponsor a First Baby of 1955 contest in Cheyenne County with prizes from local businesses. At noon no births were recorded in Sidney or Dalton hospitals and a nurse warned she would seek prospects if a baby did not arrive by afternoon. Winning baby must be born in Cheyenne County to residents with birth time written by the attending physician.
Sidney and Cheyenne County offer a varied New Year’s Eve scene with multiple venues. Hitchcock film Rear Window at Fox Theatre begins 11:50 pm with doors around 11 pm, $1 admission. American Legion Club hosts Jack Sheldon orchestra with a 1.25 dollar entry. Millard Music Orchestra at Gurley Legion Hall. Verne Byers band at Terrytown Arena Scottsbluff. City Auditorium watch party by Methodist Church at 8 pm. Elks Club hires a dance combo for 9 pm gathering. Independent Spanish Club dances at Krueger’s Lake. No Sidney Country Club party scheduled.
Sidney sends three locals to Miami for the Orange Bowl with Nebraska. Jon McWilliams starts at end after converting from backfield to wing. Larry Jones sits on the bench, while Jeff Bush performs in the Nebraska band during halftime.
Cheyenne County Extension plans its annual meeting Monday in the City Auditorium Legion Room. Dorothy McLean of Lexington will discuss her Scotland farm youth exchange trip last summer and living with 13 Scottish farming families. Claire Schuneman of Scottsbluff SSA will explain the new Social Security law and answer farm coverage questions. Two directors will be elected for three years from southwest and southeast areas. nominees include Mrs. Art McMillen, Mrs. Wilfred Nelson, Albin Olson, Ben Herboldsheimer, Mrs. William George, Charles Helfrich, and Joe Bonkiewicz. Any farm operator or spouse may vote.
Nineteen oil producers, including five new field openings, were recorded in December across western Nebraska, with 31 dry holes and 11 in Kimball County. The month yielded five new pools in Cheyenne, Kimball, and Banner Counties and a total of 231 producing wells in Kimball County. Significant wildcat strikes include Empire Drilling Co.'s Snyder No. 1 and Skelly Oil's Harry Phillips No. 1 near Kimball.
The Lions Club will sponsor the 12th Night ceremony at the band shell on Thursday January 6. President Doyle Foland announced the club voted to continue the event and Rev Harold Taylor was named committee chairman. Residents are urged to bring Christmas trees to the band shell square for a large bonfire with fire department assistance.
Audie Dennis a 33 year old Trenton Nebraska man pleaded guilty in County Court to leaving the scene of an accident and improper meeting and passing after his 1947 truck side swiped a 1952 truck north of the US 30 and Highway 19 junction east of Sidney. Damages were placed at 150 dollars for the Gurley drivers truck and 50 to 100 dollars for Dennis truck according to the Nebraska Safety Patrol which investigated the incident and later arrested Dennis.
