County planning commission quits in privacy protest

All nine members of the Cheyenne County Planning Committee resigned effective Jan 1 1978 citing invasion of privacy under the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Act They refuse to file financial interest statements required by the sunshine law The board will appoint new members and consider the resignation at a Jan 3 meeting with Lincoln County Planning Commission having resigned earlier this month for similar reasons.

New Year Holiday Closures and Schedule Changes

City and county offices close Monday for New Year’s Day and trash pickup is suspended. Cheyenne County Commissioners move their meeting to Tuesday January 3. Sidney Post Office reports no mail Sunday January 1 and no box mail that day. January 2 follows normal holiday schedule with 4 pm outgoing mail. The Sidney Telegraph will publish a new paper on Monday.

Grant to acquire land near Oliver Reservoir and upgrade dam

The South Platte Natural Resources District received a 200000 grant from the US Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, plus local funds, to buy 960 acres near Oliver Reservoir in Kimball County and renovate the Oliver Dam. In Dakota City Nebraska police used tear gas on strikers at IBP meat plant, arresting 10 to 15. Coresponding reports note multiple incidents across the country including Carter in Poland and San Marino politics. Nebraskas beer sales in six months rose to 3.5 million barrels, ranking third in the Mountain Region.

Drop in index signals economy slowdown in November

The Commerce Department's Index of Leading Economic Indicators fell 0.2 percent in November after four months of gains. The decline points to weaker unemployment, inflation, factory and housing activity through winter, with implications for President Carter's expected $25 billion tax cut package. Food stamp allotments to rise on January 1

Assistant Secretary Carol Foreman announced increases to food stamp allotments effective January 1 to reflect higher food costs. The four person allotment rises from 170 to 174 with net income limits increasing to 580, while the number of recipients pays no more. Changes occur automatically at the Cheyenne County Welfare office, with a January 12 sale day noted and tables on page 5.

Carter to Meet Sadat in Cairo to Ease Middle East Strains

President Carter plans to meet Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in Cairo next Wednesday to ease strains after Carter's year end TV remark opposing a Palestinian state. White House sources say Sadat cited the Palestinian issue as central to the Middle East settlement and was surprised and disappointed by Carter's statement made before his Poland stop on a nine day, six nation trip.
