The Sidney public library expects to open in mid January once furniture and shelves arrive and installation finishes the first week. Commercial movers will transport thousands of books from the old to the new building, and staff look forward to the completed move.
County residents will observe New Year celebrations Friday December 31 with private gatherings dominating the scene but several public activities will be open to those seeking entertainment. Local venues will host concerts dances and community events across Cheyenne County as part of the holiday observance.
A district court filing documents a damage suit by Gerald Trottier against William Markel of Lodgepole over a July 8 1961 accident. Trottier seeking 15691.85 alleges injury as a passenger in a Baxley California owned Cadillac during a collision caused when a Jeep driven by Raymond J. Hixon failed to yield. Markel counters Baxley was at fault for passing too closely to an intersection. Ruth Bowman Gray, 57, a former Sidney resident, was found dead in her El Paso trailer home. Authorities believe she died around midnight the previous night. she lived alone. No funeral details were available. Survivors include four brothers John of Sidney Bill Kenneth and Vern Bowman.
Memorial Hospital was approaching capacity on a Wednesday morning with admissions rising. Six babies were in the nursery as many patients, mainly schoolchildren, had tonsillectomies and an overnight average stay. Winter delivers peak demand while several staff members battle flu.
A petition to establish an area vocational technical school serving 17 central Nebraska counties was filed with the State Education Department. The State Board of Education set January 11 for a public hearing on the petition, the first filed under a new law approving area trade schools. The petition, with resolutions from 17 county boards, seeks to declare a 12,196 square mile district as the Area Trade School District.
A suit filed in the District Court by Ruby Henkle and Iowa National Mutual Insurance Co seeks possession of a 1965 Chevrolet sport coupe owned by Mrs. Irma Wickstrom of Sidney. The car, allegedly purchased new by C. W. and O. M. Miller of Newton, was stolen Feb. 26 in Newton, its serial number altered with a salvaged plate, and later traced through a Denver dealer to Sidney. The thieves remain at large.
The 1966 annual meeting of the Sidney Community Hotel Corporation stockholders will be held at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel on Saturday January 15 at 8 p m. Directors will be elected and other annual business considered. Clifford D. Crosby 70, a former Lorenzo rancher, died Monday in the VA Hospital Denver after several months illness. He moved to Denver area years ago. Survived by widow Ethel, two sons Dale and Wayne, daughter Beryl Cain, four grandchildren, two sisters Ernest Meyer and Raymond Kristensen, and brother Muriel Crosby. Funeral arrangements were not yet completed.
A youth who sustained severe injuries to one hand and his eyes last June when a tear gas missile exploded in his hand has filed suit for $175,000. Leslie C. Landmesser Jr. has named as defendants County of Cheyenne, the City of Sidney, Police Officers Ronald Ahlberg, Sol Willis, Sanford Butcher, Ervin Smith and Myron Peters and Deputy Sheriffs Gene Morris and Kermit Brumbaugh.
Sidney City Council approved a rural zoning ordinance after many changes, tightening commercial building restrictions within a mile of the city. They also authorized bids for two new police cars, leased the old library to the Chamber of Commerce, and aimed to match federal urban aid funds for an interstate exchange project, with about $60,000 expected in federal support. Ordinance 744 raised city and prosecuting attorney salaries. Engineers will discuss sewer plant expansion Jan 10. Four firms have been asked by the Sidney City Council to submit bids on a new city planning program. The last general planning was completed in 1955. In January, the firms will meet with the council and one will be selected to lay out the program.

District Judge H. Kuns sanctioned a joint petition for a lump sum settlement of 550.82 in the case of George M. Wilkie versus The Boeing Company and Hartford Accident and Indemnity Co. The order approves the termination of the dispute under the terms agreed by both sides. Proceedings were conducted in the district court with the judge signing the settlement agreement.
