Sidney wrestler Brian Balfour and Ogallala's Dean Barent earned Outstanding Wrestlers at the Sidney Invitational by coach vote. Balfour won 145 lb while Barent captured 132 lb. Mead of Scottsbluff and Herrington of Cozad repeated as champions at 167 lb and 185 lb respectively with close finals scores.
Penn State defeated Arizona State 42 to 30 in the Fiesta Bowl as Joe Paterno praised ASU's tough West style while noting Penn State's own East strength. The Nittany Lions built a 17-14 lead by halftime and extended to 31-14 early in the fourth, then held off ASU's late push with a 75 yard drive.
Ken Stabler threw a 10 yard TD to Dave Casper 43 seconds into the second sudden death period as the Oakland Raiders beat Baltimore 37-31 to reach the AFC title game. Casper caught three of four passes for 70 yards and a 42 yard grab set up a tying field goal.
