Lions boost Weasel fund to aid snow rescue vehicle

The Sidney Lions Club donates 300 to the Pud dlemakers for a Weasel snow rescue vehicle. Odus Sweet accepts the check from L B Neuman as the club aims for about 3000 total to buy and ship the all terrain vehicle to Sidney. Mary Evans notes 625 raised so far plus paper recycling, with delivery expected after Jan 1.

Nebraskans die in weekend traffic accidents and more cases

Bloodmobile to Visit Sidney Memorial Hospital Blood Drive

A mobile blood drive will be conducted at Sidney Memorial Hospital from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Doyle Butts, drive chairman, says over 300 units of blood are needed and donors aged 17 to 66 are generally accepted. Donors may call the hospital to schedule. Blood Services, affiliate of a 12-state system, coordinates collection, testing, and distribution to over 800 hospitals.

Nebraska farmers rally tractors in three towns supporting strike

Governors coordinated a tractor parade in Hastings Auburn and Omaha to press for 100 percent parity as Agriculture Secretary Bergland agreed to talks. The drive drew hundreds of machines and protesters while markets showed weaker hog deliveries amid the nationwide farm strike.

Groundwater Runoff Rules Issued by South Platte NRD

The South Platte NRD informs irrigators in Devel Cheyenne and Kimball counties of groundwater runoff rules effective January 1 1978 after the 1975 Groundwater Management Act. The rules aim to prevent water waste protect quality and curb surface water buildup with definitions for irrigation runoff and illegal wells. Scottsbluff WTCCA board discusses names from Dr John Harms for a review committee to study the three area schools. Dr Michael Paradise to lead the panel. Sidney City Council Set to Meet on Lease and Plans

The Sidney City Council will convene Tuesday at 7 30 p.m in the council chambers to consider an oil and gas lease for airport land and the plat of lots two and three in Parkland addition. It will also review water and sewer district extension changes and adopt related resolutions and ordinances.

Cheyenne County Chamber Elects Officers At Installation

At the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce installation Friday evening Bill Maddox was elected president and John Laing as vice president. Certificates of appreciation went to Gene Lienemann past president and Jean Kelley outgoing president of the Ladies' Chamber. Directors include Dennis Wamsley Richard Fix BE Stewart and Bill Maddox. Chamber Manager Ron Monheiser praised the prior board and expressed a commitment to continue serving Sidney.

GM settlement to repay Nebraskans over wrong engine swaps

Nebraska Attorney General Paul Douglas announced General Motors will pay more than 200000 dollars in restitution to 519 Nebraskans who received Chevrolet engines in 1977 Pontiacs Buicks and Oldsmobiles. The nationwide deal totals 40 million dollars with 44 states and covers about 93000 consumers.

Women's bureau to be established in Nebraska

The Employment Standards Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor and Nebraska State Department of Labor sign to create a Nebraska women’s bureau. Gerald Chizek will set a new administrator assistant for women's affairs and coordinate programs on employment and training for Nebraska women. The federal grant will fund $46,038 through Sept 30, 1978.

St Paul men captured after Keith County high speed chase

Two 22 and 21 year old St Paul men were arrested after a chase on Interstate 80 and through Brule Nebraska. Speeds reached 114 mph on the highway and 95 mph downtown. The suspects, identified as Michael Pierce and Gary D McLendon, appeared to be Minnesota escapees from a diagnostic center. They were taken into custody after their car left the road and crashed into a ditch. a foot pursuit failed.

Santa Claus poses as thief in Fort Worth burglary

In Fort Worth Texas an elderly widow 87 was seen by police to be visited by a man dressed as Santa Claus who arrived with gifts and a fruit basket then left with $500 claiming to be from a church. Police report a woman and two children waited in a car outside as the suspect fled up the street.
