Sidney youth problems examined by city committee
Sidney Mayor Ed Haupt appointed a committee last summer to study youth problems. The panel’s first report, presented December 8 to the city council with school board members, police, probation officers and the county attorney present, cites lack of youth facilities and parental neglect as core issues. Rodney Bates of Panhandle Mental Health offered local statistics while Lodes and Boyer noted schools limit youths’ individual ideas and urged new facilities and better youth communication with authorities. Lodes emphasized most of Sidney’s youths are well behaved, yet a stronger framework could improve conditions.
