Fort Kearny a Corridor of Westward Trails and Troops
Fort Kearny grew from a Platte River outpost into a key Oregon Trail stop. Lt Woodbury named it Fort Childs, later changed to Fort Kearny, serving emigrants, supplying posts farther west, and housing stage mail runs. It endured Indian raids until 1865, then declined after 1871 with fort demolition and land transfer to settlers.
