Sidney rush drives record Christmas mail dispatch as 27 817 items processed surpassing 27 583 from 1951. Acting postmaster Weldon Stewart notes carriers receive holiday assistants and deliveries extend to curb backlog while volumes ease later in the week.
Nationally recognized author Mari Sandoz will address Gordon at a public banquet December 27. The Gordon Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event with tickets available in Rushville at the Sheridan County Star office. The dinner begins at 7 30 p.m. in the Gordon city auditorium.
A Sidney farm machinery dealer notes rising sales and more prospects, saying farmers aren’t complaining yet. He cites December sales beyond expectations and believes administration and Congress will act in the next session. A Sidney banker notes wheat has not sold much of the 1955 crop, with penalties paid, and farmers holding some crop as insurance despite rising costs.
University of Nebraska economist El don Erickson notes Nebraska net farm income fell far behind the nation due to drought. High feed costs reduce profit from feeding operations and off farm work is limited, with nationwide farmers earning about a third of income from non farm sources.
The King's Daughters fundraising drive reached 1246.50 by noon today. Donors included Vera E. Watson, Dr. Marvin C. Sherrerd, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Mrs. Mabel A. Gade, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Beyer, and Girl Scout Troop 81 among others, with contributions still welcomed at The Telegraph.
Ray Nelson heads Nelson Motor Co successor to Horn Motor Co at 1212 Illinois St offering service specials. He retains Horn shop staff Louis and Earl Poppenberger and front end Dennis Denison with equipment from the Horn auction. Nelson cites Anchorage five year stay and snow as reason for move. he lives at 1233 10th Ave with son Ray Jr. 5, a South Ward kindergartner.
Cheyenne County plans a Wednesday 1 p.m. meeting in the Sid ney City Auditorium basement to boost soil conservation activities. Last year 145 farmers joined the Agricultural Conservation Program, leaving a surplus funds addable to this year's allotment. Slides on county practices and payment policies will be shown and explained. all county farmers are urged to attend.
Harm Henry Hippen a prominent Dalton area farmer and Cheyenne County resident died at 6 am in Dalton Pioneer Hospital after several weeks illness. Funeral services are set for Thursday at Gehrig Son Funeral Home Weyerts Church and burial in Dalton Cemetery. He was born in 1882 in Germany and came to the U S in 1890. Survived by wife Hanna and six children plus grandchildren. donations to cancer fund requested.
Nebraska safety patrolman Don Born of Sidney resigns from the highway department effective midnight Saturday after more than six years service. He did not disclose his future plans.
George Fleming of Sidney Cheyenne County Commissioner was elected president of the Nebraska County Commissioners Supervisors and Highway Commissioners Association at its 61st annual convention in Omaha. He previously served as vice president and earlier chaired the local county commissioners and Panhandle group.
Mrs. Bertha Wamsley 77 died after a long illness at Memorial Hospital. She lived in Paxton and was mother to Lawrence and Russell Wamsley of Sidney. Born November 5, 1878 in LaPorte County Indiana, she came to Nebraska as a child. Survived by seven sons and one daughter. Funeral 9:30 a.m. Wednesday from Craig Mortuary here. Burial in Paxton with services there.
City Manager Murrey Fuller announced remodeling plans for the power plant to include a new large chimney. The 3 100 kilowatt engine will have a silencer and tailpipe extending about 50 feet above the roof, replacing the old dismantled chimney.
A jet aircraft swept low over Sidney Saturday morning in a southwest to northeast path. Residents heard a loud exhaust sound mistaken for an explosion while the CAA station at the airport said no contact or identification was possible.
A Sterling motorist, Robert J. Davidson, 22, barefoot after a wreck last night, will be charged with reckless driving per the Nebraska Safety Patrol. Davidson and passenger Guy Rose, 23, were hospitalized with cuts and shock but to be released today. Damage to Davidson’s 1950 car was $450.
Five members of the Potter family were injured Friday on a Cheyenne County road near Lorenzo Colorado none seriously. Charles Lively the driver blamed dust for loss of control and a ditch bank impact. The 1955 car suffered about 500 dollars in damage and was taken to Logan County Hospital in Sterling by passersby for treatment.
Commission chairman Carson Smith of Ogallala announced a full time head for the Nebraska Wheat Commission will be named in a few weeks. The ten member panel was created by the Legislature to improve wheat utilization production and marketing in the state.
Four new locations brighten Cheyenne County oil activity with two field spottings and two wildcats bringing active wells to seven. Notable entries include Ohio Oil Sparks B No 3 abandoned after failed tests and several Kimball County wildcats plus new fields in Dorman and Duff areas. Drillers target depths around 4 800 feet as logs are planned.
