Sidney buys 16368 acres of former Sioux Army Depot

Senator McClellan informs Senators Hruska and Curtis that the Government Operations Committee has received the formal offer and property agreement by the City of Sidney to purchase about 16,368 acres of the former Sioux Army Depot for 1.325 million dollars. If no objection is raised by January 8, 1968, the transaction will close under existing terms.

January 21 date set for new air mail in Nebraska

The Civil Aeronautics Board approved air taxi routes for Nebraska mail. By January 21 air taxi operators should meet equipment and pilot standards and overnight delivery between Nebraska post offices is planned. Route Sid ney North Platte Grand Island will depart Sidney 7 pm mountain time and arrive Grand Island 11:20 pm central time with returns overnight.

Englert Elected Nebraska County Officials Leader

Ralph Englert, Cheyenne County Clerk, was elected president of Nebras ka County Clerks and Register of Deeds at the convention of county officials in Omaha last week. August Stahla of Kimball became president of the County Engineers and Roger Gaykel of Scottsbluff was named vice president.

Lorenzo School Choral Concert Set Wednesday

The Lorenzo School plans a Christmas concert next Wednesday evening December 20 at 7 30 in the school gym. The concert chorus of secondary students opens with pieces by Palestrina and Leontovich and the Messiah chorus. Elementary students perform a costume operetta He Said He Was Santa and the program ends with seasonal songs by LeRoy Anderson Simeone Moe and Torme.

Panhandle forecast predicts colder periods and snow

The Panhandle is expected to be fair and colder this afternoon and tonight with a low near 10 degrees and a high on Tuesday of 20 to 30 degrees. Snow chances rise to 80 percent Tuesday with windy west erly conditions and a brief snow dance. Temperatures Tuesday through Saturday average 11 degrees below normal with highs around 29 to 30 and lows from 0 to 10 above.

Grain Boycott Proposed by National Farmers Organization

In early 1968 the National Farmers Organization urges withholding grain from the market across 35 states to lift prices. NFC leader Gren Lee Staley says action will start by Jan 17 and contracts may be used to secure fair returns. Nebraska Wheat Growers head Raymond Davis notes price gains from withholding and cautions against tying to other groups.

Ice Blamed For Two Car Mishap Near Bridgeport

A two vehicle collision 6.8 miles east of Bridgeport on Highway 385 left Sharon Tallmage 19 of Sidney and Gerald Pitman 61 of Dalton hospitalized. Trooper Siders said slick pavement caused the wreck at the junction of routes to Bridgeport and Broadwater. Passenger Vance Duncan 18 received medical treatment but was not hospitalized. Tallmage car damage estimated at 300 dollars. Pitman wagon declared a total loss.

Fire call near Colton for oil well blaze, no damage

Sidney volunteer firefighters answered a call four miles north of Colton last Saturday at 3 20 p m. An oil well treater on the Walt Johnson lease was on fire but caused no damage.

Six Year Old Lodgepole Girl Killed In Ice Crash

A six year old Lodgepole girl, Sandy Taylor, died when the car she rode in with her mother collided with a second vehicle on Highway 30 east of Lodgepole about 9:30 am. Her brothers Randy and Ronny were hospitalized in satisfactory condition along with the other driver Anton Kripal who suffered multiple injuries. Funeral services are set for December 20 at Immanuel Lutheran Church Lodgepole with burial in Oshkosh Cemetery.

Curtis Smith Victim of Stroke in Rialto California

Curtis C. Smith 60, longtime Sidney area resident, died December 5 in Rialto California after a stroke the prior Sunday. Funeral and interment were held in Rialto with his Sidney brothers in law and their wives attending. He was born in Missouri, moved to Sidney as a child, left 30 years ago for California to work in trucking and contracting. Survived by widow Vera Anderson, daughter Ruth Bradley of Huntington Beach, and six grandchildren.

Information and Tourism Division receives thousands of letters seeking brochures maps and literature about Nebraska. Respondents range from a nine year old in Phoenix Aziz to a girl in Rolling Meadows J and a Hawaii boy with surf riders drawing, with many students using the information for reports. All requests were filled.

Ice and Snow Slam Western Nebraska and Nearby Colorado Roads

Ice packed highways and treacherous streets have kept traffic light for ten days in western Nebraska and northeastern Colorado. A mild blizzard early Sunday followed two hours of snow Saturday night, with zero degree temperatures and ice glazed gravel roads. The highway patrol warned to stay off roads unless urgent as accidents occurred including one fatality between Chapel and Lodgepole. Stranded bus from Hemingford reached Sidney at 2 am. Travel safety and Christmas plans hinge on whether conditions improve before weekend travel.

Cold Wet Weather Looms Over Nation Into January

A 30 day weather map from the weather bureau predicts above normal precipitation and below normal temperatures for western Nebraska and much of the nation through mid January. The outlook warns of an early severe winter with ice packed highways in the Panhandle and northeastern Colorado following December snowfalls.

J Joe Goldtrap announces Farmers Home Administration will set new regular office days starting Jan 1. The Sidney Nebraska office will open Mondays 8 AM to 5 PM serving Cheyenne and Kimball counties. Garden County Oshkosh office will be open second and fourth Fridays 9 30 AM to 4 30 PM. No offices the last week of December or first week of January.
