St Nicholas visited Sidney last night calling 20 children to discuss their conduct since last Christmas. An Advent wreath lit the room as adults and children sang carols and shared German customs with Miss Annie Geib singing Silent Night in German. Warm punch, hot chocolate, cookies, and candlelit decor accompanied the festivity.
The Nebraska State Museum geology and paleontology departments seek to return to the Sidney Gurley region in June 1957 to resume fossil exploration at the Ohio Oil Uptegrove Quarry. Directors Schultz and Tanner urged Ohio officials and Cheyenne County Historical Association to support reopening the quarry for further digs. About 1,000 bone fragments were recovered in six weeks of field work, including remains of deer horse camel saber tooth mastodon and others.
The Dalton volunteer fire department hosts its annual holiday fundraiser this evening at the high school auditorium. Ten members perform a follies number while the troupe presents pantomimes dialogue scenes and dancing. Bev Eddy Harold Winkelman and Gordon Carley lead the program with admission set at 75 cents for adults and 25 cents for children.
A Swedish Juletta service will be broadcast on KOA Denver Christmas morning at 5 30 M S T in Swedish with Rev. Paul E Palmquist as speaker. KOA will record the service December 22 and mail the recording to Stockholm for airing on Christmas Day, featuring a Swedish choir and quartet. KOA will start a half hour earlier to fit the program, chosen for its 50 000 watt West and Midwest coverage.
A free Christmas songs concert is set for tomorrow night at 7 30 in the Sidney Junior High auditorium. William Fankhauser leads the vocal music department with Gail Wellensick and Annie Merrick guiding, Margaret Anne Olson on piano. More than 200 singers from sixth grade through senior high will perform, including special high school units and combined choirs.
The Sidney City Council will open bids tonight for bonds financing paving work in nine districts. Bids total 154000 for district and intersection paving across districts 63 65 66 67 68 72 73 74 and 75. The session also covers a continued Water District No. 1 assessment discussion while protest over assessments by Burlington Railroad is noted.
Police estimated damage at about $200 after a crash in Sidney yesterday evening. Richard H. Sharp, 16, backed his 1950 model car from a curb on 13th Ave between Jackson and Illinois St and struck the side of William E. Hradecky 42.
Cheyenne County oil activity centers on three wells with British American Oil Co drilling Dvorake No 1 NE NW of 1-16-53 at 5 665 feet and Shell Oil Johnson A No 1 midway down a southwestern wildcat. Don M Rounds Sanford Oil reveal a three well program including Nelson 1 Pearson 1 and Thompson 1 as wildcats and semi wildcat in Dalton Field.
Contributions to the King's Daughters totalled $1,234.91 by noon as the fund drive continues. The year’s large list of needy families includes children receiving hot lunches, milk, and glasses, with Christmastime baskets and year round aid planned. Donations from individuals and groups, including Kiwanis Club and Epsilon Sigma Alpha, are listed with amounts.
A cold air mass will skirt the Nebraska Panhandle tonight with readings 15 to 25 degrees below zero elsewhere. Cheyenne County highs from zero to ten degrees above are expected after a light snow from last night left less than an inch of accumulation.
In Sidney, a week before Christmas, the postoffice is crowded with packages and cards. Acting Postmaster Weldon Stewart says today may be our big day as mail volume builds toward last year’s record of 300,896 items between December 1 and 25. Rail and bus traffic is brisk as Union Pacific reports near impossible seat availability on east and west routes, with passenger trains fully booked.
Traffic on Sidney bus lines stays steady with some second sections. Weather outlook expects a green Christmas with normal to slightly above temperatures and light snow Thursday. Schools and St Pauls Lutheran begin two week break this Friday and end Jan 2. Most Sioux Ordnance Depot workers off from Saturday to Jan 2 though some are kept on call. depot remains open. Christmas business remains brisk as more trees appear in windows.
The drought reduced Clarke-McNary cedar allotments for Cheyenne County farmers to 1 900 trees for next year, about one third of last spring’s total. Private nurseries add 2 008 cedars at five cents more each while pines run out next month with no quota. Orders already exceed prior years, with 9 000 trees ordered. broad leaf trees and shrubs remain available.
A Chamber of Commerce meeting tonight at 8 outlines a fund drive to send Sidney High School band to the President's inaugural parade in Washington. A 15 member organizing group led by Jack Lowe aims to raise 7000 to 9000 dollars with local priority and some outside support.
Sidney Iron Works announces a plan to manufacture soil conservation machinery. Owner John Ehernberger says production will begin after Jan 1, with expansion potentially adding ten jobs. The firm, now at 11th Ave and Grant St, aims to produce Midwest style attachments with authorized capital stock of 100000.
