A Sidney man F A Jack proves flax as a profitable first crop on 300 acres at $3 per acre plowing. After seed, board, and other costs, the project nets about 4537.50 from 3350 bushels valued at market, with five bushels lost per acre in a Sunday wind. the land will later be sown to spring wheat and oats.
The local basketball boys host Julesburg in the season opener at the High School gym Saturday at 8 50 PM. Coach cites strong practice since Thanksgiving with players Parks Clinton Swanson Closman Bentley Bixby Wright Andrews Crock Perse earning first squad spots. Admission 15 cents children under 12 and 25 cents adults. Supporters urged to attend and back the team financially. Sidney Steam Bakery advertises holiday treats.
A county survey shows general prosperity as harvest ends in Cheyenne County Nebraska. Readers report high yields for winter and spring wheat, oats, barley, and corn. Notable producers include H Kragel with mixed crop returns, A A Sharp with 7 000 bushels wheat and 14 000 oats, and Fred Rehmer with 63 00 wheat off 240 acres and 2 000 corn off 50 acres. Rehmer expects further shipments and asserts high land value at $75 per acre.
Large crowd fills Odd Fellow Hall for Eudora Lodge No. 257 regular meeting. Officers re-elected unanimously for another year amid a festive program of poetry, songs, and piano numbers. Luncheon followed as guests praised the organization’s happy, prosperous era.
Last Friday Mrs Frazey s class held a monthly party at the Methodist church parlors where each boy and an equal number of girls shared half a pie, a lively pie themed evening. Miss Jessica McCann and Mrs Antrim hosted a shower at the Antrim home for Miss Doris McCann with games, gifts of aluminum ware and hand painted china, and guidance on managing a husband. Doris is set to wed A L McDaniels at a quiet home wedding December 23. Kings Daughters completed Christmas giving plans and voted Mrs Mayme Mann into membership. The B M S club will meet next Tuesday with Mrs Ed Ahrens rather than as printed in the year book.
Excavation is under way for Gene Davis new home described as entirely modern. Building contracts awarded for modern houses by Ed Swatzlander and Ed Puthoff with Antrim and McDaniels as contractors. South Sidney sees growth, a new grade school nears capacity, while residents warn against unwarranted expansion. Mack Radcliffe bought 87 cows from H. R. Fuller and moved them to his Morrill county ranch.
A listing for The Two Orphans described as the greatest cast of artists seen on screen plays at the Ideal Theatre Friday night with admission priced at 10 and 20 cents.
Rose Street is being freshly gravelled this week and shows a big improvement. When wet weather prevails a gravelled street is the most comfortable one to be found. Street Commissioner Wellner has the work in charge.
Cc P McDaniel returns as freight conductor in the fourth division after months off. W S Allery back after days absence and a grippe epidemic affects several railroad men. W D Clifton Union Pacific agent visits Sidney in official capacity. Jas Grove has recovered from a knee sprain and is back to work. Fred Jack resumes work after farm life study at his Dalton ranch. Geo Nath named western representative for the Firemen in the Division Safety Committee meeting in Omaha. Local Safety Committee discusses National Safety Council bulletins. A E Dowell from North Platte visits Sidney to adjust fire damage claims from Herdon and Potter losses in late October.
Lester McDonald of Laramié Wyoming and Mrs Emma Camers were united in marriage December 14 by County Judge Chambers with Rev May and Councilman Wellner as witnesses.
A license was issued December 13 for John Frederick Folkerts and Amanda Marie Rabe, both of Weyerts. The couple are well and favorably known. no record of a wedding is noted.
Last Sunday afternoon at 2 o clock a wedding took place at the Methodist parsonage with Rev May officiating. William T Sharman and Hannah Sophia Johnson were joined in matrimony with Casper Rasmussen and Julia Johnson as attendants. The couple, from northeast of Sidney, left on No 10 for a eastern state honeymoon, with wishes for happiness.
Mr Jim Anderson and Miss Enid Liddle of Ovid Colorado were united in marriage at the Methodist parsonage with Rev May officiating. Witnesses were Mr and Mrs Wim G Span. Anderson, a former Hildreth Nebraska pastor, and his bride are esteemed by their circle and wish for a bright prosperous future.
Miss Gertrude Lenzen returned Saturday from a ten week coast trip that she enjoyed. She visited a married sister in Concord California who then accompanied her to the Pan-American Exposition. There she saw the wonders of the fair city and explored many sights with fellow citizens.
Early Wednesday three thirty the Neubauer building housing Owl saloon and McIntosh building housing Mon fort’s cigar store burned, with firemen stopping the spread. McDonald barber shop also destroyed by water smoke and debris. Losses insured. two modern brick replacements planned.
Geo. Engesser performs January 15 in Two Ole’s after an earlier show January 7 featuring The Commercial Traveler at Tobin Opera House.
