Omaha’s 750000th conventiongoer from Sunol honored

Cecil Hunt of Sunol Cheyenne County was hailed as Omaha’s 750000th convention delegate at the Nebraska Association of County Officials event. He received a city key from Mayor Rosenblatt, a Chamber plaque, was made an honorary member, and used a chauffeured car during the convention.

No Buses For Soo Damsels Christmas Party

No bus transportation will be provided for the SO Damsels annual children's Christmas party at the Soo Theatre Sioux Ord nce Depot Sunday December 13. The event will proceed with two sessions for children ages up to six at 1 pm and seven to twelve at 2:15 pm. Parents must provide their own transport.

High Court Rejects Caril Fugate Bid for New Trial

The Nebraska Supreme Court denied a request by 15 year old Caril Fugate for a new trial. The court affirmed Lancaster County District Court findings that her jury convicted her of first degree murder for aiding Charles Starkweather in January 1958 killings, and she received a life sentence.

More Oil Leases Filed In Past Week In Cheyenne County

Continental Oil Co. added three leases in Cheyenne County during the week ending Dec. 10, per County Clerk I L Pindell records. The week saw six new oil and gas leases filed seven assignments two lease renewals and one overriding royalty assignment. One release covers 3 440 acres in the county’s western section held by Chris Terman and others.

Albert Benish Dies at 85 Resident 73 Years in Cheyenne County

Albert Benish aged 85 and a longtime Cheyenne County resident died Thursday at West Nebraska Memorial Hospital in Scottsbluff after five days hospitalization and prior five months in Sidney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home with Rev. C Fred Parks officiating. burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials to Memorial Hospital Rest Home. Born in Chicago November 18 1874 he moved to Cheyenne County in 1886 and engaged in farming and business in Sidney before retiring. Survivors include daughter Viola of Sidney three brothers and two sisters. The Benish farm near Potter was an early social center with community dances twice a week.

Beet Payment Details for 1959 Sugar Beet Harvest

The Great Western Sugar Company will pay beet growers 6.83 million dollars on December 15 as the first payment on beets delivered November 5 to 30. A prior 26.05 million was paid on November 20 for beets delivered through November 4. President Frank A. Kemp reported harvest nearly complete on over 98 percent of the 1959 crop across Colorado Nebraska Wyoming and Montana with about 2 percent unharvested in Colorado and small portions in Montana and northern Wyoming. Nebraska harvest is nearly finished.

Rev Hasenyager Resigns to Pursue Graduate Studies

Rev W. K Hasenyager of First Christian Church resigned Tuesday to serve Evergreen Community Christian Church in Colorado as student pastor while attending Illiff School of Theology in Denver for a bachelor of divinity degree. He will leave Sidney after Christmas with his wife and three children. He helped lead local civic projects and served as secretary-treasurer of the Sidney Ministerial Association, re-elected this year. A supply pastor will serve until a new pastor is named.

Three Hospitalized In Rash Of Accidents

A trio of accidents near Potter Dalton and Sidney left three people hospitalized none in serious condition. Richard Borchart and Arthur Borcher sustained severe injuries on San Marino Drive at about 6 45 p m. A Dalton man Marvin Pelster 21 suffered cuts and bruises in a one car crash north of Dalton at 8 30 p m. A two car collision near Pot ter involved Vergil Frickey and Donald Christensen with minor injuries, neither hospitalized.

Supreme Court Reverses R. Zorn Estate ruling

Nebraska Supreme Court on Friday reversed a Cheyenne County District Court verdict in the Ruth B Zorn estate dispute. The high court ruled for appellants Roy Buchanan Sidney Ray Buchanan and Betty Walford over the 1953 Will which left real estate to them. Ruth Zorn died in 1957 and Howard Zorn had sued in 1958.

Manslaughter Charge Filed In Fatal Shooting

In Ogallala Nebraska 19 year old Edgar L Smith of Julesburg Colorado was charged with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of 17 year old Sharon Nowak. Nowak was outside a car talking with Smith and Rod Shelburn of Brule when a pistol discharged striking her in the forehead. She was flown to Denver where she died after surgery.

Telegraph Editor to Judge Press Contest

Jack H. Lowe editor of The Sidney Telegraph accepted an invitation to judge human interest and feature stories in the Louisiana Newspaper Contest. Bruce H McCoy secretary of the Louisiana Press Assn issued the invitation and said Lowe was recommended by Verne Scofield secretary manager of the Nebraska Press Assn. Judging must be completed by January with only one judge used.
