One of a kind railroad car maintenance program at WNTC

Western Nebraska Technical College launches the nations first college campus freight car maintenance program led by Michael Holley. Railroads including Burlington Northern, Union Pacific, SWEPCO and PLM railcar firm support the venture with equipment and funding. Initial enrollment is about 20 with facilities already in place and classes planned year round.

Cheyenne County farm women plan drive to raise farm prices

A meeting is set for Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in Sidney to form an organization of farm women pressing for higher prices and national attention. Promoters include Mrs. Keith Spiker, Mrs. Tom O Connell Sr., and Mrs. Lavern Flessner, aiming to mobilize support from families reliant on agriculture.

Alcohol Advisory Group Formed for Southern Panhandle

A four county Alcohol Advisory Committee was formed in Sidney to coordinate services for alcoholics. Members include Max Waitman and Rev Kors, with regional officials planning a Dec 17 meeting and seeking more funds to expand treatment as state bills consider raising liquor tax money to about 17 million.

Santa to give rides in Sidney Saturday at court house

Santa Claus and his sleigh return to Sidney this Saturday with rides for kids from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. at the Cheyenne County Court House. Local shops extend hours to boost Christmas shopping, open 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays and until 8 30 p.m. on Thursdays.

Chamber seeks new secretary for Cheyenne County

The Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce searches for a new secretary after the resignation of Mrs. Mary Meick effective December 31. Bill Maddox and Dennis Wamsley of Sidney lead the committee seeking a replacement and hope to hire a full manager like former leader Ed Cole, who served nine years before resigning last February.

Gun and wallet found as extradition prep begins

Nebraska authorities pursue extradition for two murder suspects in Skiba case. A .22 revolver and Skiba’s billfold with ID were found near the Dix interchange on I-80. Ballistics will test the gun to confirm it as the murder weapon.
