Arrangements are nearing completion for a recognition banquet Wednesday night honoring Mr and Mrs Fred Kriesel of Gurley who topped more than 200 entries to win the Nebraska championship in the Radi Station WNAX Farmstead Improvement program Governor Val Peterson and Senator Ray Babcock are expected to attend with a fifty member farm groups delegation and Yankton radio representatives to award a $1000 merchandise prize The Kriesels remodeled their home adding rooms a new front entrance a large picture window a utility room and a separate kitchen office area while updating the yard and outbuildings Their one mile west of Curie farm spreads 1100 acres with 300 acres in wheat barley oats and feed and the couple plan a large banquet program and regional honors

Final rites for Alfred Paul Jacobs, Marine killed in action June 15 1944 on Saipan, will be held at St Pauls Lutheran Church at two oclock Sunday. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery with military escort. He was the son of Mr and Mrs George Jacobs of Sidney and a 1939 Sidney High School graduate. He enlisted in 1940, served with the 2nd Division, saw duty in Iceland, San Diego, Guadal canal, the Gilbert Islands, the Marianas and Solomon Islands. He received a Presidential Citation for Tarawa and a posthumous Purple Heart.

Ronald Lee Mayden 18 of Dalton is charged with passing a bad check at Ewing's Store. He waived extradition and will be taken to Sioux Falls S Dak to face charges of car theft and grand larceny from the State Prison Farm. Sheriff Schulz said action against Marden may be dropped here as the Sioux Falls case is more serious. Mayden pled not guilty and was bound over to district court. The car seized in Dalton belonged to A G Schaffer of Marceline Missouri. Missouri authorities will pursue.

The body of Navy Seaman Second Class Myron Eugene Goodwin, missing since December 7 1941 after the West Virginia was sunken at Pearl Harbor, has been identified in Halawa Naval Cemetery Oahu. He was born January 1 1921 in Denver and was educated in Sidney Nebraska where his family lived at 715 Fifth Street Germn. He was 20 at death. his father was a mechanical superintendent at The Telegraph shop. Now in specialized printing work at Gering.

William N Foster Early settler dies at 80
William Newton Foster 80 died in Denver on December 7 after a life spent homesteading in Cheyenne County and running hotels farms and a mailing route. He was born October 8 1868 in Charleston Illinois and later lived in Sidney Dalton and other communities before retiring in Denver. He is survived by son E B Foster brother J H Foster four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Gehrig Funeral Home with interment in Greenwood Cemetery.

Oakley Atkins of Cheyenne suffered a broken right foot and severe leg bruises when a truck struck a switching train Saturday night near Bushnell. He was riding on the side of the train, could not avoid impact, and was hospitalized in Cheyenne. Atkins and family are linked to Sidney presidencies.
