Farm Corner notes diversification and rising irrigation
In a December 1966 Home & Garden feature the Farm Corner column discusses diversification in farming, including late crops, hay hauling, and increased liver stock feeding. It highlights irrigation growth with wells over 200 and nearly 15,000 irrigated acres, plus winter wheat conditions and potential weather risks. The piece also offers a Christmas tree preservation recipe using Green Garde horticultural iron, corn syrup, and household bleach to keep trees green and sturdy through the season.

Low Roughage Diets Boost Finish for Cattle, Nebraska study says
York University of Nebraska nutritionist Dr. Walter Woods told the Nebraska Livestock Feeders Association that low roughage rations give more consistent gain and better feed efficiency, with five to 15 percent hay equivalent of total ration yielding near optimum results. He noted silage and hay are equally effective for roughage, warned that low roughage can raise liver condemnation risk, and compared urea, soybean, and energy levels in finishing versus growing rations. Calcium at about 0.28 to 0.37 percent (air dry) emerged as linked to maximum gains.
