The Ohio Oil Co plans the first granite drilling test on its Huntsman High field north of Sidney at the Pahl No 3. It will be the deepest test in western Nebraska’s largest oil and gas producing area. Ohio moves rigs from the Kallhoff No 1 near Dalton and follows prior Dakota sand activity in the area.
The Gerler No 1 well in section 23 13 53 near Cheyenne County is being completed for oil by Miracle Fifer for Shell Oil Co after reaching 5726 feet and yielding 270 feet of oil in the D sand with gas rising to surface in 35 minutes. Offset wells include Harold Olsen No 1 shut in gas well and Kimball County proximity offsets. Olds Drilling Co started rig work on Schilling No 1 in Kimball County while Continental Carpenter Broadbent No 1 shows only water in Muddy sand DST and Dakota tests near Henry. Wayne Whipple No 1 in Harrisburg area at 500 feet, Lovercheck No 3 (Stanolind) and Sinclair Gilbert No 1 near Broadwater with cement waiting complete the survey.
The Sidney Civic Club elected its entire 1952 slate without opposition at Tuesday’s meeting. Ira Steward was named president, Rudy Munderloh first vice president, J. R. Miller second vice president, with Kermit Moore, Warren Stuart and Frank Mattoon as directors. An transcription error swapped Stanley Preble for Stuart, but no ballots were used and Stuart’s election was certified. Steward praised Gordon Tobin, who resigned as secretary after five years, and George Kolzow became secretary. The next event is the annual party for area youngsters on Saturday, December 15, with more details to follow.
The Farmers Union Gas and Oil Co Op will hold its annual stockholders meeting December 12 at the Sidney City Auditorium. The 10:30 a.m. session in the Legion Room features speakers Guy Williams of Consumers Co Op Denver and Joe Schulte of Consumers Co Op Scottsbluff. Three directors will be elected for three year terms, 1951 interest checks distributed, with Ed Meyer presiding.
A marine recruiter will be at the post office next Tuesday December 11 at eleven o'clock to accept applications for enlistment and answer questions about the Marine Corps.
More than 1507 volunteers signed up for Blood for Freedom to donate. The campaign on Friday December 14 features a Union Pacific rail car at the U P depot near the waiting room. Mrs. Robert Clark, chairman, says two Nebraska stops in a three state test with American Red Cross will measure rural response for armed forces blood needs. Donors are advised light pre donations and nourishment options. a doctor will supervise.
A Cheyenne County public auction set a total of 138855 dollars in bids for school land leases as the state board proceeds with sales to the highest bidders. Sidney results show multiple lessees paying from 100 to more than 9000 dollars for various sections amid legal challenges to the earlier renewal law. A three judge panel ruled the sales legal, dismissing Propst suit claiming constitutional violations.
The Kings Daughters Fund topped $700 Thursday as donations poured in. The group seeks names of needy families for Christmas relief and asks readers to submit names at The Telegraph office. List of donors and amounts totals $709.00.
The New Fox Theatre schedules a Saturday morning benefit titled Canned Goods Show to aid The Kings Daughters. Admission for youngsters is free with any canned good donation. Rex Allen features and four color cartoons highlight the program, as manager Elmer Haines aims to collect hundreds of cans for Christmas baskets. He hopes to approach a thousand cans, boosting holiday cheer in Sidney and surrounding areas. Parents are urged to bring children, who already love Rex Allen.
Two men, Jess Owen Williams and George Leslie Williams, were sent to the federal jail in North Platte to await arraignment in Omaha on Dyer Act charges for transporting a stolen car across state lines. Also held were Verl Birch and Harvey Willard Gord, felons recaptured near Chappell, facing similar charges after escaping Utah State Penitentiary. Snow delays postponed hearings for Melvin McKellips, Lawrence Holland, and Clarence Hotaling.
A Sidney branch of the American Association of University Women has organized recently. Any woman with an approved college degree is eligible for membership. Sidney state Senator Ray Babcock said he will not seek reelection from the 43rd district after eight years in the chamber. He plans to move to Denver, ease business pressures, and spend more time relaxing as he nears sixty. Babcock thanked voters for their support in four campaigns and noted his unopposed run last election. The 43rd district includes Cheyenne, Kimball, Banner, and Morrill counties. Filings for the office may begin soon ahead of the January 1958 session.
The Western Nebraska Mineral Society will donate lapidary and geological reference books to the Chappell Memorial Library. At Monday’s meeting 28 members attended with visitors from Chappell. Emmett Soule led the program, showcasing a hydraulic saw. Bergstrom and Shunk demonstrated sanding and polishing equipment. Next meeting is Tuesday January 7 with Wilbur Criswell on Agate.
County Assessor Roy Gish announced that owners of real property must voluntarily declare their holdings to the county assessor so they can be placed on the tax rolls. He noted many home builders are unaware of the obligation and warned of up to a fifty percent penalty for unreported properties from prior years. He plans an education campaign early next year and offered to help anyone unsure about tax status.
A Sidney merchants group voted to keep Friday night hours until nine and continue Saturday openings to aid holiday shoppers. The plan targets workers at Sioux Ordinance Depot who cannot reach downtown by five. Debates over ending Saturday openings in the new year continue. Christmas decor and brisk holiday advertising mark the season as pay at the ordnance depot boosts weekend trade. The annual Sidney area Christmas party is set for Saturday, December 15.
Postmaster John Martinosky warns that the next week will bring a Christmas mail surge. He urges residents to mail cards and gifts promptly, noting last minute parcel post from out of town and potential delivery delays. Cards for out of state should be mailed by December 11, local by a week before Christmas. Post office windows are busiest in the afternoon. residents should mail in the morning before ten to ease crowds.
A wet snow drifted into Cheyenne and hit the Panhandle causing traffic tie ups from Big Springs to Chappell. Highway 30 was blocked for hours. eastbound buses halted and left lanes snarled from Lexington to Chappell. By Thursday morning the storm extended from the mountains to Goodland Kansas with wind driven snow and blizzards reducing visibility.
