The Telegraph acts as central agency for The Kings Daughters Christmas fund to aid needy families and aged people in Sidney. A $50 check starts the fund and contributions will be recorded and published as received to bring joy to families otherwise lacking a Christmas Day.
Rudy Munderloh was elected 1953 president of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce at the quarterly meeting at the country club. J. R. Miller and L. K. Nelson were named first and second vice presidents, with Lowry Lindell Bob Clark and Matt Janda chosen as two year directors. Munderloh succeeds Ira Steward after a year as vice president as secretary George Kolzow reviewed annual activities.
Sidney retail stores will stay open until 9 p.m. Friday December 19 and until 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday December 22 and 23. Neal Atkins, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce retirees committee, announced the plan reached at a retailers meeting. The five shopping days before Christmas will have extended hours with a normal start on December 10 and 20, and Christmas Eve closing at regular time or per each store.
The Chamber of Commerce drives Sidney trade growth while Stewart reviews the hospital fund drive. Members discuss attracting new industry and refer several suggestions to new officers. Lee Maddox will attend the state racing commission meeting in Lincoln December 9 and 10 on pari mutuel racing autonomy.
Cervi's Journal reports Fox Intermountain Theatres will sell four theatres in the district to Ray Davis, Fox district manager, following Justice Department disposition orders. Davis was in Sidney last week but offered no comment. He has served with Fox for 25 years and had an early assignment in Sidney.
The Rev. Neal Morris of First Christian Church Sidney resigns effective January 1 to become pastor of First Christian Church Columbus Kansas. He plans to move December 30 with his wife and year old daughter Kathryn. He organized groups, led remodeling, and expanded church programs while also serving in local ministerial associations.
Sidney sets up extensive holiday lights despite funding setbacks. Civic groups donate to fund the Santa and Reindeer display on the courthouse and 93 trees on Illinois and Jackson streets, with a large central tree at the 10th and Illinois intersection.
Cheyenne County Hospital Association directors call a formal session on December 10 at 7 30 PM in the City Auditorium. Ira Steward encourages all campaign contributors to attend to discuss a permanent organization, board size, nominating committee, and plans for securing federal funds and completing the hospital design.

Martin Grand Island J Monroe Bixler Harrison Terry Carpenter Scottsbluff and A A Fenske Sunol with added comments.
Vern Dorothy of Pleasanton Nebraska told Cheyenne County Farmers Union members that farm cooperatives pay their fair share of taxes, citing Kearney where co-ops rank among top taxpayers. The annual meeting re-elected Russell Olson as president and adopted resolutions supporting farm loan programs, 90 percent parity prices, and limiting board members per local.
Cheyenne County Sheriff W. W. Schulz Chief Sol Willis Police Captain Bill Rezac and Dr. Jason B. Roche are witnesses in The State of South Dakota vs Sherwood Franklin Strausser. Hearing began in Custer this week with a possible appearance next week. Strausser was arrested mid September during a getaway with the girl after a traffic stop.
Temperatures edges above freezing in western Nebraska Panhandle cut through heavy snow and ice crust, easing road drifts. Sidney reached 37 with 13 below, while November marks third-coldest month on record per Scottsbluff station. Charles Evans, convicted by jury of non support intoxication and failure to comply with court order, was sent to Lincoln Tuesday to begin a two year term at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. Deputy Sheriff Bart Taylor transported him to Lincoln.

Thomas Black Feet and Douglas Horse, Indians held in Kimball County jail on assault and related charges, reportedly tried to tunnel from a cell but were stopped. Arraignments were delayed due to bad roads, Judge John Kuns re scheduled for Saturday. The pair were arrested after the November 8 cafe beating and kidnapping of Mrs. Belva Cole and Mrs. John Eby, with whiskey and beer found in the car.
A petition in the District Court cites Al Wilhelm as plaintiff against Donald Maxwell Platte Valley Transport Co and Toronto Pipe Line Co seeking 1934.46 in damages for injuries and auto damage from an accident on March 12 involving a 1951 GMC semi tank truck owned and operated by the defendants.
The school board examined preliminary plans for a new southside school and an addition to the northward building. Architect Eugene Sternberg of Denver submitted drawings and will return to make changes. He will meet with the board about ten days apart until final approval.
Fourteen drilling rigs were active in Kimball County in western Nebraska, the most in the region since the Julesburg Basin oil boom began four years ago. Wildcats started in three southern locations while a Shell Jab No. 5 producer completed in the Southwest Potter field. Plans for a Kimball County pipeline to join Platte Pipe Line were discussed, with no definite project yet.
