Village Trustees to tax liquor dealers for street lighting

Village authorities pass an ordinance requiring liquor dealers to pay two hundred dollars yearly as a special occupation tax to fund street lighting. Geo Richardson a prosperous ranchman from the county's north part and Miss Sarah J Kelley now living in Sidney wed in Denver on Monday last. Kelley formerly served as deputy county treasurer and deputy county clerk, a post she still holds with Clerk Barrett. Railroads file tax protest petitions in U S Court Omaha

The U P and B M railroads have filed petitions in the United States Court at Omaha and obtained orders from Judge Munger restraining county treasurers from forcing tax payments. The case will be heard in Omaha around December 26. Notice of the order and hearing was served on Treasurer Greenlee by telegraph.

Lands Open Near Oshkosh Under Kinkaid Law

The Sidney land office received notice of lands opened and usable under the Kinkaid law for filing on March 1 1905. Areas include Township 19 ranges 46 47 and other blocks near the river. Several defendants in a robbery case were discharged for insufficient evidence while Hugh Ward was fined 50 dollars and costs for assault.

Kinkaid law may be widened to grant more arable land

Owaba papers report efforts in Congress to amend the Kinkaid homestead act to redraw land from entry into arable irrigation and grazing zones. Proposals include selling unclaimed lands to settlers at 10 to 25 cents an acre and allow homeseekers to commute land after a period. Supporters argue larger holdings aid farming and cattle interests while fencing by cattle barons has boxed in government lands.

Government Irrigation Project at North Platte Site

The government plans a large cement dam at the North Platte and Sweetwater junction about fifty miles above Casper Wyoming. It will store mountain snowmelt and feed the Platte in summer with a 22 000 acre reservoir, 60 feet deep, and two tunnels to prevent overflow. Five irrigation canals will distribute water to Casper Douglas Goshen Fort Laramie and Interstate areas with costs ranging up to 4 000 000 dollars and serving Nebraska. Construction will start soon and maps will show irrigated lands and side ditches.
