Fire fanned by high winds threatens farms near Sidney
Wind gusts up to eighty mph whip a grassland fire that started near a No Hunting sign seven miles north of Sidney. Firefighters fought blind amid dust and smoke as residents moved valuables to safety and speculated on a cigarette-origin blaze. No homes were burned and the fire remained along a waterway east of the Elwood and Huntsman area as crews worked to contain the spread.

Dam Drainage Drains Wild Horse Lake North of Bayard
The Soil Conservation Service removed water from Wild Horse Dam in the Wild Horse Watershed Project, draining about 62 surface acres and up to 30 feet deep. District conservationist Bob Foster said drainage will take two to three days. Sportsmen opposed draining, noting the lake as a popular fishing spot and an experimental site for Coho salmon. Federal funds built the dam. SCS plans keep Wild Horse as a dry dam under flood control.
