Sidney Flight Service Station gets new weather equipment

The Sidney Airport Flight Service Station becomes the first in the nation to receive an automatic meteorological observation station AMOS from the U S Weather Bureau. The 50 foot tower and related devices provide temperature dew point wind data pressure and three hour precipitation readings every 20 minutes with sky conditions and visibility observed on site. Data goes to the FAA Weather Message Switching Center in Kansas City for nationwide access. The part time facility was chosen to test AMOS and the cost cited by staff is about 100 000 dollars with spring delivery expected.

Post Office to extend hours for holiday season

The Post Office in Sidney will keep weekday hours 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but extend two Saturdays to 8 a.m. to noon on Dec 4 and 11. Postmaster Ferris Preble urges early mailing and reinforced tape, well cushioned packages, and inside address slips for safety during handling.

Dorwart and Knicely Seek County Judge Post

Tom Dorwart of Sidney joins Jack Knicely as applicants for the 19th Judicial District county judge seat covering Cheyenne Kimball Deuel and Banner Counties. A nine member nominating panel led by Judge Leslie Boslaugh will hear the filings at 10 a.m. Saturday in Cheyenne County Court House with at least two names to Gov. Exon for appointment.

Board accepts resignation of chamber head Mary Meick

The Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce approved the resignation of executive secretary Mary Meick effective December 31. She had submitted the notice September 3, with board action occurring this Tuesday. Meick had led the chamber since February and previously assisted former manager Ed Cole for two years.

Alcohol and blows in Kimball murder trial

Alan Seems 39 faces first degree murder charge in the death of his wife Sandra at their Kimball home on May 2 1976. The case hinges on whether death resulted from a lethal 0.47 blood alcohol level or brain injury from a blow or both. Dr W O Brown testified that both factors could have caused the death and noted bruising patterns suggesting a beating or falls. The trial began after a venue change and jurors heard multiple witnesses including the mortician and sheriff as proceedings continued.
