Irrigated Nebraska Corn Looks Good Despite Crop Stress

Agronomist Dr Lewis Nelson reports Panhandle irrigated corn in good condition with potential 100 plus bushels per acre. Harvest hinges on killing frost expected in October. Irrigation could add about 659.7 million dollars in value statewide. 3 million irrigated acres projected at 102 bu/acre totaling 306 million bushels. Volunteers to man call center in Sidney telethon

A group of local volunteers will answer pledges in Sidney for the Jerry Lewis Telethon on muscular dystrophy. They will handle phone calls from 8:30 pm Sunday until the Telethon ends at 4:30 pm Monday, using numbers 254-2284 and 254-2285.

Fort Sidney Post Commanders' Home to close after 1975 season

The Fort Sidney Post Commanders' Home will close after its 10th summer season on Labor Day. Open weekends 1 to 5 pm, it drew 1,300 visitors from nearly every state this year. The Cheyenne County Historical Association owns and restored the home, with lamplight tours possible in winter. Restoration of the officers quarters nearby progresses, aiming to complete exterior by 1975 and interior by 1976 for the Bicentennial, aided by a $1,000 federal grant and $8,000 in matching funds.

Partly cloudy skies forecast as cool front nears

The Nebraska forecast notes overnight lows in the 50s with partly cloudy skies and a chance of scattered light showers as a Canadian cold front pushes southeast. Saturday should be pleasant with highs in the 70s, while Imperial posted a 75 degree high and Scottsbluff recorded a morning low of 47.

Enrollment Down in Sidney Public Schools

Sidney Public Schools report total enrollment of 1,648 after one week of classes, down 24 from last year. Elementary 864 and secondary 794 split include North 283 South 311 Central 270 totaling 664. Junior High 421 and Sidney High 373. The senior class is 116, the 8th grade is 147, elementary 5th grade 137, and kindergarten 121. Pedersen expects 20-25 more students after Labor Day as families relocate.
