Enrollment up 20 percent at Western Nebraska Technical College

Western Nebraska Technical College reports 148 new and 66 returning students this registration period, a roughly 20 percent rise on new enrollment from last year and a two student increase in returning students. Cosmetology starts later, with about 20 inquiries anticipated to lift fall enrollment by about 27 percent.

District approves four administrative contracts in Nebraska district

The board approved four administrative contracts including Dindinger and Gary Foster, dean of students at WNTC, with negotiations on teaching faculty continuing. Keith Hulbert stated offers to teachers included a flat 200 pay raise or base increases to 9000, 9100, or 9200 plus reduced or varied insurance contributions, noting current insurance costs and a new law requiring equal payments.

Oktoberfest plans near finish line in Sidney

Near completion plans for the Oktoberfest at Legion Park in Sidney October 1 3 include a 40 by 180 foot tent on blacktop and active concessions committees. Meetings will be held Tuesdays at 8 p m at the Senior Citizen Center through Sept 28 with all reps urged to attend.

Dalton man injured in pickup rollover on county road

Dorwin Reimers of rural Dalton was injured Thursday afternoon when his pickup rolled over after losing control on a county road. He was taken to Sidney hospital by Dalton Rescue Unit and held overnight with cuts a chipped elbow and a broken arm. The 1974 model pickup sustained about 1800 dollars in damage.

Ash Hollow to get new visitors center and displays

Nebraska lawmakers approve a $180,000 Ash Hollow visitors center design with plans by the Game and Parks Commission. Construction could start spring 1977 after January bid setting, with exhibits tracing plains Indian movements emigrant tales and Oregon Trail history at the site near Windlass Hill and Ash Hollow Cave.

Delay in Sidney I 80 sculpture repairs extends schedule

The 40 foot aluminum sculpture Roadway Confluence faces a longer delay after bolts broke prompting District Engineer Jim Jensen to close the access road and fence the site. Sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp from Tilson NY will arrive Sunday and start repairs Monday with local welders.

Panhandle Growth Inc reports a labor shortage as its 1972 industrial push in Sidney Cheyenne County creates jobs but lacks workers. The Egging Co in Gurley seeks 30 to 40 new production workers while Independent Cable Midwee near Sidney expects up to 80 hires soon. Housing remains a challenge but more single-family homes rise. Employers search regional and metro areas with limited success.
