The War Assets Administration will sell buildings at the prisoner of war camp four miles east and one mile south of Scottsbluff with bids due by 2 p.m. September 5, 1946. Bids opened publicly at the camp office. inspection possible daily except weekends and on Labor Day September 2, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time.
Col Richard A Sothern outlined a 12 point modernization program for the Sioux Ordnance Depot, including rail system upgrades and new buildings, as engineers from Denver visit this week. He stressed aiming to make the depot a permanent installation and pledged closer ties with Sidney, with future talks on theatre, post exchange, officer quarters, and barracks improvements. Accompanying him were Lt W E Freeman and Capt R C Lewis.
A committee of O J Weymouth, Jack H Lowe, and secretary Gordon Tobin was appointed by John Martinosky of the Chamber of Commerce to organize the sixth district teachers convention in October. Weymouth said the first task is surveying town rooms as housing will be the main challenge since many rooms come from nonrental residents. About twelve hundred teachers are expected, with the district president of the teachers association visiting Sidney on August 31.
The Calcutta Pool dinner and auction will be held Wednesday at seven o'clock at the country club. It serves as a prelude to the club championship golf tournament with qualifying completed Sunday and pairings set for flight bidding. Clarke Grieve defends his title.
The following traffic complaints were filed in county court during the past week: Keith Kaylor, no driver's license, one dollar and costs. Carl A Pierce, fictitious license plates, no hearing. John Davison, operating motor vehicle without driver's license, one dollar and costs. Walter Blover, speeding, ten dollars and costs.
A public meeting is set for Wednesday September 4 in the district court room at eight to discuss forming a Cheyenne County Fair Association. About 118 residents who paid 2 50 as original shareholders in a potential nonprofit will be present. The meeting is open to all interested and could lead to private citizen management of the county fair under Nebraska law requiring a public vote.
Most Cheyenne County schools start Monday September 2 with bell timing aligned to Labor Day. Sidney Public Schools defer opening to Tuesday while Weymouth notes readiness and possible student class shifts to balance enrollment after registration details earlier reported.
A doubleheader baseball benefit at Sidney Legion Park is planned for Sunday September 1 to aid crippled children. Lions Club president Glen Spearow originated the drive and A J Jergenson leads the finance committee with the county's first polio case last week increasing urgency.
A 21 meeting drive by Democratic organizers to mobilize voters for November runs the last two weeks of September and first two of October. State chair William Ritchie says the kickoff in Dakota City on September 16 features national committeeman James Co Quiggley of Valentine as principal speaker, with further dates in Scottsbluff Morrill Garden Scotts Bluff Banner and Cheyenne counties.
Farmers protest moving grain from bin storage as lack of shipping facilities and long lines at elevators slow the export flow. A Dalton observer noted many trucks queued, with piled wheat spoiling or sprouting, while some still haul from bins to elevators despite local guidance to move open grain first.
Republican State Chairman Bert Howard announces a statewide caravan of GOP candidates to visit every county for about 30 days starting in September. Steve Martin arrives in Sidney after a round of air trips starting from the Bikini atom bomb test site on August 16. He visited Enjalein Hawaii San Francisco Washington Knoxville and Fort Bragg before reaching Denver. Discharged from the army he was an official observer and reporter on Bikini tests and will move to Pearl Harbor for three months of civilian atom bomb research work.
The Telegraph informs readers that OPA allowed a newsprint price increase nearly doubling costs from a year ago. Rising operating expenses force consideration of higher subscriptions or advertising rates, though management prefers not to raise subscriptions immediately. Subscribers may prepay up to two years at current rates while the offer lasts.
Dr H Silvernail of the Nebraska State Game Commission warns hunters to avoid excessive kills of hen pheasants to protect breeding stock and ensure a strong hatch for the next year. He cites a six to seven chick average per hen and stresses preserving the birds to restore peak pheasant numbers lost after the 1945 hatch. He also cautions against lengthening seasons or increasing bag limits, warning the ring neck could become the only game bird if depletion continues.
Harry Grey of Ordville was fined 104 for hunting without a permit and shot game birds out of season with a rifle from a public highway and a car. He faced five counts and was jailed until the fines are paid or time served. Elenora Raper, driving the car, was fined 34 for possession of game birds. Grey’s rifle was confiscated.
Waste paper salvage continues with a drive in Sidney this Saturday August 31. J EK. Mahr secretary of the salvage committee notes demand remains strong, indicating ongoing community participation in recycling efforts.
Lodgepole’s 22nd annual Old Settler reunion to begin Monday September 2 with a grand parade at eleven. Old timers from the panhandle and northeastern Colorado expected, prizes in parade events for saddle and gaited horses ponies floats old time transport and more. Sidney band led by Grant Mathews to provide music and a formal timers program at one in the park. Tiverett Richards to speak. oldest settler to be honored. Regional VA director Ashley Westmoreland warned that the GI bill subsistence cap could force hundreds of Nebraska veterans off the on the job training program. About 2,600 Nebraska trainees now receive more than the new limit, though most will qualify for partial subsistence. Veterans groups are urged to lead the fight against the pay cut.
Mrs Clark Grieve has purchased The West Hotel at 933 Illinois St from Mr and Mrs A W Adams and will take possession September 11. Grieve, chief clerk of the Selective Service office, has submitted her resignation though not yet officially accepted. The Adamses will move to Loveland Colorado and have no immediate plans to reenter business.
Ole Olsen of the Olsen and Johnson team spent hours in Sidney Friday. He had his new Chrysler and trailer serviced at The Maddox Motor Co. Employees described Olsen as amiable and cooperative and he gave autographs and a sample of his famous wit.
Sheriff received a call from railroad workers Saturday about a “dead man” found in Union Pacific yards. Undertaker called, sheriff and funeral home arrived, but the man was alive and jailed after sobering up. Henry D Schreder given ten days in jail at arraignment before Judge Robert A Barlow.
Cheyenne County records polio in Ordville. Two year old Gary Robinson, son of Mr and Mrs Jess Robinson, was sent to Lincoln hospital after diagnosis. County physician Dr I B H Brimm said a shoulder paralysis symptom was noted. Authorities impose limited child activities in Ordville while public health officials decide on quarantines. Schools in Cheyenne County set to open on schedule with local decisions on Nebraska-wide policy. New polio cases reported in Kimball and Deuel counties.
Harold F Benjamin manager of the Social Security Administration office in Scottsbluff will be at the United States Employment Service Office 842 Ith Ave Sidney between 9 00 am and 11 00 am Thursday August 29. Persons with questions about benefits payable under the Social Security Act should contact Mr Benjamin at that time. He suggests inquiries be addressed to the regional office 114 Flynn Building Scottsbluff to prevent loss of benefits.
Rae Jones told Rotary Club members about a family trip through Wyoming highlighting agriculture gains beyond grazing. He cited a dozen years of litigation-driven development, the state becoming a key grain and farm product producer, and a surge in mountain park tourist traffic with tight accommodations.
City council signs agreement with Omaha firm Kirkpatrick and Pettis for aviation field bonds and paving district paying bonds. The package includes aviation bonds of about 25 000 to 30 000 and paying bonds around 170 000, plus progress warrants. The deal hinges on attorney opinions and city transcripts, with a bid‑fallback rider allowing a switch to a lower rate bidder and a 1 percent break fee if Kirkpatrick and Pettis decline.
