Local talent shines for Oktoberfest festival plans

Potter Man Elected Vice Chairman of Great Plains Wheat Board

Ray Davis of Potter Nebraska was named vice chairman of the Great Plains Wheat Inc Board at the annual Wichita meeting. Davis, a Nebraska Wheat Advisory Committee member, recently completed a term as Nebraska committee chairman and is a past officer.

Roads Dept to Open Public Meetings in Sidney

Nebraska Department of Roads and the State Highway Commission begin a series of public information meetings with a Sidney session at 7:30 p.m. on September 13 at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Residents from many area counties are invited to discuss highways and the 1978 to 1983 construction program, with further meetings planned in North Platte Alma St. Paul O Neill Wahoo and Papillion.

WNGH to Acquire St. Marys Hospital in 1.5 Million Deal

West Nebraska General Hospitals and St. Mary representatives reach a sale agreement valued at about 1.5 million dollars for all assets and liabilities of St. Mary. The deal awaits Nebraska Department of Health and bondholder and Catholic Church approvals. WNGH will manage St. Mary during a 90 day interim period as a formal review is filed.

Sidney schools open with sets of calendars for St. Pat’s and Sidney Public Schools

St. Patrick’s High School begins classes today with enrollment figures unavailable and expected student totals similar to last year. Sidney Public Schools project about 1,525 total students across elementary, junior and senior high levels. Both systems schedule multiple no classes and vacations through December including Labor Day, teacher in service days, a teachers convention, and Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks with staggered dismissal times.

Kearney Council Rejects Pioneer Airways Plan

The Kearney City Council rejected a Southern Route Commission proposal to have Pioneer Airways of Denver serve Kearney McCook and Hastings. Four council members opposed with Mayor Francis Richards voting for it. Hastings may swing the decision as its officials consider the plan amid Frontier Airlines' proposed service discontinuance.

Sidney council weighs 3 percent occupation tax protest

Northwestern Bell protests a proposed three percent occupation tax on Sidney, Nebraska as the council seeks more data. The meeting rezoned east Sidney residential tracts to commercial and industrial use, approved a sanitation shop, set utility budgets, and eyed a $22,000 revenue shortfall plus a Wheeler’s Store site plan and a new water well contract.
