Sidney Fire Chief Calls 1957 One Of Worst Years For Fires

Sidney this year has seen four deaths and six serious injuries from fires, with property losses between 300000 and 400000. Chief Harvey Vizina labeled 1957 among the worst fire years, noting major blazes at Ohio Oil Co and Maddox Motor Co plus numerous wheat field and residential fires. Funeral services for fire victims were held Wednesday as Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital reported Mrs Pauline Kittleman in critical condition and the survivor of a fatal house fire did not improve.

Two New Doctors Open Offices in Sidney

Two new doctors of medicine will open their offices to the public in Sidney tomorrow. R. H. Olson and D. E. Wilkinson, general practitioners and University of Nebraska College of Medicine graduates, will practice from the former Sidney Hospital Building at the southeast corner of Tenth Avenue and Jackson Street. Both physicians trained together in Washington state and are Nebraska natives, Dr. Olson from Omaha and Dr. Wilkinson from Cherry County.

Time schedule for draft office cut to half hours

Cheyenne County Selective Service office lowers weekly hours from 40 to 20. Starting next Monday it will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon, eliminating afternoon openings. Office manager Mrs. Nate Christner announced the change.

Wheat exports trim U.S. wheat surplus to 905 million bushels

The Agriculture Department reported record exports for the year ending June 30 reduced the wheat carryover to 905 million bushels as of July 1, with further declines expected by next July 1. Exports in 1956-57 dropped use of wheat domestically to 587 million bushels while subsidy programs moved much of last year’s export.

17 Steam Engines Return To Duty On U P Main Line

H I Markel U P trainmaster at Sidney said 17 3900 series steam engines were called back into service between Cheyenne and North Platte due to heavy traffic on the main line. They normally peak in summer but this year traffic arrived later than usual.

Onken Bays Acquires Frontier Stations Near Sidney

Onken Bays announced the purchase of the Frontier terminal station two and a half miles east of Sidney the Frontier station at Brownson and the Chicken in the Basket next to the terminal station. The three units were formerly owned by Art Cunningham, a Sidney car dealer. Oaken and his son also operate tank wagon service from Sidney and Brownson.

Potter Village Marshal Langley Murder Case Arraignment

Friends of Potter village marshal Dale Langley have funded a defense in a second degree murder case. Local residents were solicited with 110 approached and 103 contributing to the defense fund. The incident arose after Langley allegedly fatally beat Jack Stanford in a Potter tavern.

Brakeman Dies After Accident In Sidney Yard

Leland Pete Mann 60 of Sidney died at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital from a yard accident. A 30 year UP brakeman, he was found after attempting to board a steam locomotive near Sidney Wednesday night. Funeral set for 10:30 a.m. Monday at Craig Mortuary with Odd Fellows graveside rites.

Cheyenne County will join a five year anti brucellosis program starting August 28. The plan applies to the entire county and there were no objections voiced at the hearing.

Brucellosis vaccination program discussed at county meeting

At a public meeting on Wednesday livestock officials explained the calfhood vaccination drive already sanctioned in three of fifteen precincts. Stockmen under the Brucellosis program can obtain free serum for their cattle, and cattle from Brucellosis areas may gain easier access to market channels.
