Cheyenne County reports three apparent oil discoveries this week, marking one of the best drilling records in several years for Wildcatters in the Potter Dalton area.

Polling Places Announced In Wheat Referendum Aug 30

Polling sites for the Aug 30 1963 wheat marketing quotas referendum were listed by Herbert Krauter chairman of the ASCS county committee. Voters may cast ballots from 8 am to 8 pm at Calton Sunol Eagle Davison Union Valley Dalton Gurley Sidney Huntsman Lorenzo Lodgepole Potter Trognitz Sioux Chambers and other local precincts. If two thirds vote yes, price support rises to at least 1.82 per bushel with penalties for excess wheat. if not, quotas and penalties are dropped and price support falls to about 1.2 per bushel. The notice also notes new field openings and nearby oil discovery activity in several counties.

Tax Levies Approved Sidney Up Four Mills Rise for School Costs

Official 1962 tax levies released by County Clerk I L Pindell show Sidney's total tax rising from 84 to 88 mills with 3.95 mills from higher school costs. Sidney's city levy remains 22.40 mills, Cheyenne County drops to 3.70, and the state levy climbs to 9.35. Local towns report varied changes led by school costs and bond plans. The Sidney Lions Club had requested courthouse improvements, while farmers pressed for a county vote, noting jail and records storage concerns addressed by 20 000 dollars for microfilming.

Bids Soon On Missile Work

The Air Force will invite bids for a new Minuteman missile wing at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne. Authorized funding of 100 million dollars covers 200 solid-fuel ICBMs and 20 launch control centers. The wing, largest of its kind, will span eight counties in Wyoming Nebraska and Colorado with a total cost around 158 million.

Registration Dates Set For Sidney Public Schools

Sidney Public Schools will start the fall term on Wednesday August 29. Grade school pupils register on that day from 8 30 to 11 30 a m unless they changed residence or are new in the system. Junior and senior high students register Thursday and Friday August 23 and 14 at the junior and senior high offices. Seventh and tenth graders register Thursday 8 30 to 11 30 a m eighth and eleventh graders 1 to 3 30 pm. Friday morning ninth and twelfth graders register 8 30 to 11 30 and all new junior and senior high students register in the afternoon.

Farmers Co-Op Grain to Build Feed Processing Plant

The Farmers Co-Op Grain Co. approved an 85000 dollar feed processing plant at its grounds on east Highway 30. Construction starts within ten days, lasting four to five months, with 23 new bins atop an existing steel structure. The plant will process and dry grain, offer pellet options, and serve farm deliveries across Kimball to Chappell and Dalton to Peetz.

Rites Friday For Alvin J Frei 41 Potter Resident

Alvin James Frei 41 of Potter died Tuesday morning at Memorial Hospital after a weeklong hospitalization for a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services set for Friday at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Sidney with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Rosary Thursday at 7 30 p.m. at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home followed by Knights of Columbus rosary. He leaves wife Clara, his mother Marie Frei of Sidney, five sons John Joseph James Jay Jerome and Janice all at home, and sister Marjorie Ann Morris of Riverside California.

Music Teacher Needed At Sunol Public School

Sunol Consolidated School begins the new term with a mostly full staff. only a music teacher position remains open. Supt. Francis Cortney notes new junior high and high school faculty, including himself in social science and physical education, plus Mrs Lucille Bower in home economics and science, and Dick Grimes in math and science. Delma Turg eon starts her fourth year as English, commercial teacher and principal. New grade staff includes Phyllis Rebley for third and fourth grades, with returning Pearl Fitzwater and Harold Fitzwater. Custodian Elmo Wilt and cook Margaret Seda also return. Potter Queen To Be Named At Potter Days Event

Seventeen candidates compete for the 1962 Potter Days Queen title to be chosen at the Queen dance Saturday night in the Potter Legion Hall. Beta Sigma Phi chapters sponsor the event and will crown the winner with two runners up receiving bouquets and gifts. The queen will reign during Potter Days September 14 and 15 with music by Millard Music Band.

Three Sentenced To 60 Day Jail Terms

Arraigned in county court this morning were Thomas New Sidney charged with second offense intoxication Mrs Josephine New charged with indecent exposure and intoxication Josephine New granddaughter charged with intoxication and disturbance and Joshua Walker Rosebud South Dakota charged with indecent exposure and intoxication Walker pleaded not guilty and asked for a hearing The other three pleaded guilty and were sentenced to serve 60 days in county jail The four were arrested at Legion Park Tuesday night by the Sidney Police.

Y’all Come Conservation Aerial Tour Slated Sunday

Cheyenne County Soil Conservation District sponsors a Sunday air tour offering 20 minute rides in large private planes. Tours cover west or east county with flights starting around 6 30 am and likely ending by afternoon due to turbulence. Tickets available at SWCS office, from supervisors, or Sidney Airport. farmers and families urged to participate for a bird’s eye view of farms.

August Warm Dry So Far In This Region

The August rainfall remains scant with FAA data showing only .47 inches for the month. Observers report minimal showers locally, noting .31 inches on Aug 3 near Potter, and scattered showers across Bond Wieger and Don Hafer areas. Sidney recorded .03 inches as a cool front and possible showers were forecast.
