Months of work culminate in the official 1977 Cheyenne County Fair opening. A new grandstand and rodeo chutes, two new food stands, and Kiwanis additions mark the fair. 4-H winners announced tonight at 8 before the grandstand, with gymkhana, horseshoe, and livestock events on the schedule.
Results from the 4H Horse Show held Thursday name Valera Lafler and Debi Katen as grand champions in senior and junior divisions respectively with Marla Deaver and Terris Kallhoff as reserve champions. Ribbons across Performance Horsemanship Reining Poles and Barrels highlight nine senior and nineteen junior contestants with multiple participants earning purple blue and red awards.
Groundbreaking ceremonies for the 3.5 million Sedgwick Sand Draws Watershed project are planned for Sept. 30 in Ovid Colorado with keynote speaker Congressman James Johnson and invitation to Virginia Smith. Bid opening for the Ovid Floodway estimated over 100 thousand dollars is Sept. 15.
Dates for the 1977 United Fund drive were approved at the board meeting. Advance gifts letters will be mailed Tuesday September 6. Jack H. Lowe chairs this phase. Business and residential campaigns run the week of September 19. Don Christians leads business solicitation. Diane Cook and Shirley Flohr co chair residential. The goal is 15650 dollars with 11 beneficiary organizations. Next board meeting 7:30 p.m. Monday September 12 at Fort Sidney Motor Hotel.
An 18-year-old woman from Natrona Pa reports being assaulted at the Deuel County rest area east of Chappell. She described a male suspect in a green Kenworth semi. She was examined at Memorial Hospital Sidney and released, continuing her journey to California.
A constellation of rodeo stars are entered in the Cheyenne County Fair Rodeo while results from fair competition in food and sewing are announced and Peetz Plateau School prepares for its opening.
Dr. John Najarian reported that surgeons removed a pelvic tumor from Senator Hubert H. Humphrey and found it inoperable as he remains alive but with terminal cancer. Hastings council seeks Kansas expert after Police Chief Mel Hail resignation. Elvis Presley funeral held privately for about 200 attendees at Graceland while 75,000 fans waited outside for a last souvenir and flowers from 2,200 arrangements.
Western Nebraska Technical College officials report all 24 graduates of the freight car maintenance program have job commitments. A special committee reviews shortages and funding as layoffs slow new hires. Board president Gene Lienemann and WNTC president Charles Michael say layoffs by Burlington Northern are temporary and common to preserve capital.
USDA permits producers to extend maturing 1976 crop wheat and feed grain loans to Oct 31 1977 with no storage allowance during extension. Loans are nonrecourse and secured by the crop with CCC administered by ASCS. Rexroth notes the extension helps farmers hold grain for higher prices and smoother marketings.
