Sidney invites bids for the furnishing of all labor and materials and construction of improvements in Improve ment District No 3. Estimated total cost is 32000 dollars with specifications on file in the city clerk's office. Bids open September 8 at 2 pm in the council room. work expected to start soon and finish this fall.
The Gheyenne County Farmers' Holiday association will hold a picnic at Krueger's Lake on Thursday, August 24. Several speakers will appear on the program to discuss farm loans and marriages and other topics. Farmers and families are invited, with a dance to follow in the evening.
An automobile belonging to a Denver salesman was stolen from in front of the Commercial hotel Monday night. It was recovered by Night Marshal Renfield in the east part of town early Tuesday morning after the theft was reported around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.
Ali-Din and his stage spook party bring a thrilling midnight show to Fox Theatre starting at 11 PM Saturday. A feature film precedes the stage performance with several unusual effects claimed from All-Din's Spiritualistic Seance.
Sidney scouts and scoutmaster Iver Robinson, who have been at the camp at Tong Peak since August 7, returned this week. The Sidney group was active in camp activities and claimed a winning stunt as a major accomplishment.
The tenth annual Old Settlers reunion will be held at Lodgepole on Labor Day Monday September 4. Official program and other details will be announced next week and carried in this paper.
Twenty one Cheyenne county farmers urge Governor Bryan to halt upcoming auctions of 176 800 acres of state school lands facing rent arrears. They warn auctioning now could ruin many solid farmers in western Nebraska, noting three years of hard times and many tenants still reside on the farms. The letter appeals for reconsideration as leases are set to be placed on the auction block in coming weeks.
Grain dealers will attend an informal meeting of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator association of Nebraska in Sidney Saturday. The session continues meetings in Lincoln Kearney North Platte Columbus and Sidney to discuss the grain dealers code to be sent to Washington next week. Principal speakers include Frank Rutherford secretary of the association from Omaha.
Four Sidney automobile dealers attended a western Nebraska meeting at Alliance Monday evening. A National Recovery Administration code was framed and approved for inspection. Attendees from Sidney included Ethel Beckmann Maynard W Osborn Joe A Gibson and T E Kokjer.
The Sidney public schools will open the 1933 34 term Monday September 4. Some people heard rumors that schools would not open until later but Liebendorf reports these rumors are false. In the past schools have opened on Tuesday but the board sees no reason for not opening on the first Monday this year.
The county wheat allotment committee stalls while awaiting Washington and Lincoln guidance. County Agent Willey hopes to mail applications by Wednesday, but delays persist as counties quarrel over the fair plan. Nebraska allotment chief Broxaw wants all counties to receive forms at once, delaying signatures until meetings finish. Four volunteer committees will be formed to visit farmers once forms arrive.
Report from Sidney picnickers after a Potter youngster was said lost or drowned at Johnson's Grove near Potter Monday evening. Sheriff Schulz said he knew nothing of a weekend search and the Potter newspaper could not confirm the report. Local people indicated there was more on page 6.
Barbers from twenty two western and northwestern Nebraska towns met in Alliance to discuss an NRA code for the industry and settle standard prices for services. A tentative schedule set haircuts at fifty cents and shaves at twenty five cents, with Sidney already charging those rates except children's haircuts. The code aims to end price wars by establishing a universal price for barber work.
Ernest Smith in charge of local bulk station operations for The Westernm Nebraska Oil Company won a free trip to the Century of Progress by exceeding the oil sales quota for the twelve bulk station managers. William Slama, manager at Potter, needs three more gallons to win a free ten day trip. several others near their goal. Announcement made at the main office.
The state abandons its charge against The Western Public Service for alleged importation tax or license on fuel oil for its power plants. Inspectors misinterpreted the law, clearing the company of evading fees and reducing adverse publicity. Dwight Felton admits the public notice was unwarranted and pledges corrected coverage. officials anticipate continuing scrutiny.
William Fornoff paid a $25 fine and costs in Nebraska court on a charge of selling gasoline without a license. A more serious charge of importing fuel for sale without tax payment was dismissed after the payment of charges.
George Hodge, state director of federal re employment service, outlines a plan to appoint county managers to open offices and place 60,000 unemployed statewide. He estimates 240,000 people or 17.2 percent of the population are affected. John Bittner of Sidney is named manager in Cheyenne County to oversee the unemployment list. Hodges reports 250 heads of families in this county are out of work and deserve consideration on publicly financed jobs this year. In total, Hodges lists 4,250 unemployed heads of families across the nine panhandle counties. Garden and Banner are excluded from the report.

The Sidney Rifle Club hosts a state meet Sunday inviting top shooters from Wyoming Nebraska and Colorado to compete at the outdoor range. Both large and small bore events will run all day with at least ten clubs entering. Local members will staff events while visitors witness a high level meet starting at 7 a.m with flag ceremony and lasting into the afternoon.
Reports accuse Sidns and employers of NRA pledge violations with many working 55 to 60 hours weekly though 48 hours are expected. No official charges yet as no county general or empowered committee exists. Richard L Matcalfe of Omaha general says fifty three county generals named. remaining forty to be chosen soon. Nebraska hog valuations fell sharply from 21,874,948 to 7,253,257 between 1931 and 1933 as headcount slipped from 2,028,436 to 1,908,728. Average value per hog dropped from 10.76 to 2.63, with western eleven counties totaling about 93,000 head valued at 295,846.
A meeting of Home Loan Owners and buildings and loan officials is set in Scottsbluff to define eligibility for aid under the plan. Frank Ficher, district manager, said the date is Wednesday with local representative appointments in twenty counties to follow. Charles Smrha explains a distressed homeowner includes foreclosures in the past two years or facing foreclosure, with delinquent taxes or assessments. Cooperation from mortgage holders is needed to refinance endangered properties, requiring mortgagors to accept home loan bonds in place of the mortgage.
Governor Bryan hinted he will likely reject all last week bids for bituminous mat surfacing yet officials say Cheyenne county still has a strong chance to obtain a project from Brownson to Kimball. Road officials have spoken with local men and may ensure the work is completed this year under county supervision.
Farmers and train dealers in Cheyenne County and Sidney urged Secretary Wallace to maintain the pegged minimum for wheat to prevent a market collapse as Nebraska harvests its wheat. The Cheyenne County group cites Winnipeg as an indicator of danger and accuses the Chicago Board of Trade of pressuring government policy. A relief committee in the county was formed with Lincoln leaders to administer aid, appointing M. Ehav as chair and Barlow as secretary, to process applications with county review and a standard form.
Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Christian church for Edward Sizemore 74 who died Monday at his brother George Sizemore's home in Sidney Draw where he had lived seventeen years. Rev J H Bicknell officiated with interment at Greenwood Cemetery Gehring Funeral Home in charge. Sizemore had been in failing health for years. His only close surviving relative is his brother George. he never married.
The Telegraph News reports correcting a previous statement. A. Slush, manager of The Sidney Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company, says his uniform price for cleaning men's and women's ordinary garments is $1.00, regardless of delivery or cash and carry. He notes an ad claimed $1.25 for cleaning and pressing with delivery.
William Mitchell of McCook, an experienced mattress worker, opens the Mitchell Mattress Company at 925th Avenue. He offers full mattress repairing services with a promise of first-class work and strong recommendations from prior cities of employment.
A Department of Justice agent in Sidney this week conferred with U S Commissioner Rohner A Barlow on charges to be filed against William Wesley Soon, horse tracker, for theft of horses from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. A hearing before Barlow is required before Wesley can be taken to South Dakota for trial.
A large truck backed into a lamp post in front of the city offices in Kearney Nebraska. The crash tore a sidewalk section and knocked the pole down, leaving a 2200 volt line briefly exposed. Western Public Service linemen arrived and cut the connection.
The Cheyenne County Historical Society plans a major membership drive. A membership fee of 50 cents was agreed previously and an official membership card is to be printed. Several people have asked to become members, according to J C Root, secretary.
Thieves stole a tent from the Osborn home yard during the early morning hours on Tuesday. The occupant, Ralph Osborn, was asleep in the house, unaware of the theft until daylight. The incident occurred while the family slept, with the tent taken from the yard.
The Oilers have entered another softball tournament starting Sundays. They recently took runner up honors at a tournament at Alliance and are counting on winning the title this time.
