Dalton residents faced a brief water scare Friday as one of the two wells failed. Officials limited usage while repair crews inspected the system and found a faulty safety belt, which could be replaced quickly, restoring normal supply.
A 3:40 pm Sunday crash on a county road 3.2 miles west and 4.7 miles south of Potter involved a 1953 pickup driven by Leonard L. Nelson of Potter losing a front wheel and veering into the oncoming 1955 Buick driven by Richard Brauer of Sidney. Mrs Brauer sustained shoulder bruises but was not hospitalized.
The Sid ney Chamber of Commerce named 32 year old Mor ris Minnesota native Ack Laimer as manager to start September 1. The board met at a Ft Sidney Motor Hotel luncheon and chose Laimer unanimously after weeks of interviews. He has business and chamber experience, led a tourist agency, is married with six children, and will replace Wayne Moran who left for a Minnesota post.
The Hillside Golf Course in Sidney drew over 120 players as youth dominated the Country Club tournament amid ideal conditions after a hot spell. Ivan Adams rallied to defeat Ron Tighe in a hot match, with semifinals set for Adams vs Nelson and Wilson vs Ladine, while multiple flight semifinals and finals paths spread across the day.
The Kennedy Memorial Swimming Pool fund drive at the State Home for Children in Lincoln continues as construction funds are secured. Organizers hope for enclosure to provide year round benefits for children. Local chair Jack R. Knicely requests contributions be sent to Supt. Robert Rudell, State Home for Children, Lincoln, Nebraska.
Acting County Judge P. J. Heaton, Sr. fined Reinaldo L. Garcia and John G. Hernandez 60 dollars each for rioting and resisting an officer, and Frank J. Medrano 100 dollars for destruction of property after a downtown Sidney fracas near Snyder's Clothing Store at 12:55 a.m. Sunday. Police officer John Bauer, Jr. suffered minor scratches. the trio was jailed and later moved to county jail for hearing.
The United Fund annual budget meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Benny Hochman, general chairman, says all organizations wishing to participate should send a representative and present their budget needs for the coming year. All United Fund board members and chairmen are urged to attend.
Wayne Allen of the Nebraska Wheat Growers Assn calls Nebraska wheat farmers to unite against fierce inter regional and international competition. He cites high transportation costs, shows Nebraska stores four times as much wheat as competitors, and credits NWGA with five 1965 program achievements including freight rate cuts and boosted exports.
A weekend rash of traffic accidents in Sidney caused about 500 dollars in vehicle damage and led to a reckless driving charge against Robert Tschacher. The latest crash happened at 1:30 a.m. on Maple Street when his car hit the west dike after leaving a curve. Earlier incidents involved multiple backings and minor collisions on Kings Street, Highway 30, Jackson Street, and near Harlan's Bakery, plus property damage to an awning at a Drive In and a car wash incident where a driver’s foot slipped from brake to gas.

The Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion sold 1,300 head of cattle to eastern buyers, boosting the market by about a dollar. Over 17 carloads shipped to Illinois feeders earlier in the week included yearlings at 20.35 to 21.35, calves at 23.40, and heifers 18 to 19.50. Next sale on Saturday, August 29, expected to set records for volume and prices.
Voting for the Queen of the Dalton Fall Festival begins this week with two ballots mailed to every family. Sixteen candidates from Dalton High School, 8 seniors and 8 juniors, compete for Queen and two attendants to be crowned by the 1963 Queen Norie Pelster. The pageant at 7:30 pm features talent acts and coronation, with a Legion Auxiliary tea and dessert events preceding the festival that runs September 14 and includes parades, a football game, horse show, games, and carnival rides.
Lincoln Nebraska farmers were advised that the Gaines wheat variety is not adapted to Nebraska conditions and not recommended for production in the state. Duane Foote of the Nebraska Grain Improvement Association noted a few growers shown interest due to high yield potential. The soft white winter wheat, developed by Washington Oregon and USDA breeders, matures late, is highly susceptible to stem rust, and lacks winter hardiness, not fitting Nebraska's hard red winter wheat pattern.
Lincoln area report on USDA beef grading revisions that would cut maturity categories from three to two and shift marbling standards. The proposed rules allow marketing lighter, younger cattle as choice, shortening feeding periods and boosting turnover. Nebraska feeders may gain from lower unit costs, though farmer feeders relying on home grown feed could see limited benefits.
