Kimball County Fair Opens Next Week With New Talent Show

Kimball County workers finish preparations for the 40th Kimball County Fair running Aug 21 22 23 with Banner County joining. A new 4 H club talent show for ages 8 to 21 features instrumental reading skit and vocal divisions with prizes. Entry blanks available at the County Extension office due Aug 18. The high school auditorium is the tentative venue with a backup plan announced. A Saturday dance by Millard Music and his orchestra will fund the new 4 H Exhibit building. Plains Historical Society will offer coffee to welcome old timers.

Heavy Wheat Straw Baling Shifts to National Shipments

In Cheyenne County balers harvest tall wheat stubble, cut and bale hundreds of bales. Straw goes to mills for paper and strawboard, feeders across the country, or to farmers in exchange for remaining bales. Barley Winter Hardiness Limits Nebraska Trials

J C Swinbank of the Nebraska Extension says Hudson and B-475 winter barleys fail to meet Nebraska winter hardiness. Hudson, a new eastern variety, showed good yields only if winter survival occurred and is less hardy than Ward and Reno. B-475, from Missouri, is not recommended north of St. Joseph. Nebraska tests discontinued.

Rhoades Given Pin For 15-Year Membership

Dixon F. Rhoades of Sidney received a pin for 15 years of continuous VFW Post 1681 membership at Scottsbluff during the Monday evening meeting. The highlight was a plaque of appreciation to the Gering High School band for its participation in the VFW state convention. Twenty-five year insignias were awarded to six members and six others were named for the honor but absent. Bill Selak, post commander, led the presentations.
