Sidney launches a broad improvement drive to surface 200 blocks and enlarge the sanitary sewer system and disposal plant to serve a 50 percent larger population since 1940. Bids for the $165000 project open September 2 as city adds park work and utility lines.
The Nebraska State Bar Association announced three September institutes on community property law. Sessions start at 10 a.m. in Omaha September 2, Kearney September 3, and Scotts Bluff September 4, with Oklahoma City attorneys H. T. Tumsky and Eugene S. Wells directing alongside local lawyers. The 1947 law, effective September 7, allows spouses to divide income for federal tax savings.
Orville Parker 17 was rescued after cramps left him underwater in a sand pit near the Platte River Sunday. He was revived with first aid help from Dr J B Pankau and Bridgeport squad, then discharged Wednesday after a narrow survival and a prior fainting from the incident.
Western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming growers will meet in Scottsbluff on August 25 to present views on a proposed federal marketing agreement for potatoes. The meeting follows a July 7 session at Scotts Bluff High School where PMA officials outlined the case for the agreement and called for a public hearing.
Police Chief Harvey Vizina warned Thursday that soap box racers with attached motors create hazards for youths. He urged parents to keep children off streets at night as these racers lack lights brakes and steering. He cited a recent incident where a boy nearly died.
Dr Louis H Sixta of Schuyler Nebraska well known in Sidney delivers a seven pound girl to Mrs Claude Sayers of Litchfield Nebraska aboard a speeding Union Pacifier passenger train. He was en route to Denver to visit his daughter Editha Pindell and granddaughter Jackie Pindell. Train nears Ogallala and mother and baby are taken to a hospital.
A man and a child died and seven others were seriously hurt in a midweek car crash near Shelton Nebraska. Mary Wolf age 3 died instantly. O C Dimick 64 of Dunsmuir California died later. The Wolf family and Dimicks had ties to Sidney and Ogallala. The injured were taken to a Kearney hospital. officials said all were out of danger by late Thursday.
County officials announce the naming of weed district supervisors for a newly created countywide noxious weed control district. The meeting in the district courtroom next Tuesday August 19 at eight o'clock will also establish assessments and a general levy expected at one half mill. Agricultural experts call the program one of the most important farm undertakings in years.
Sidney ends long dry period after a heavy rain that soaked western Nebraska and spread across Dawes and Box Butte counties. More than .60 inch fell locally, with up to one-half inch in Bridgeport. The storm brings relief to irrigators but hampers fair events and delays some wheat shipments. Wheat yields range 10 to 55 bushels per acre in Dawes, Box Butte reports show wide variation and rust noted in some fields. A Hemingford elevator expands unloading capacity as new crop moisture stays low and weights stay high.
Major E. W. Shook, depot inspector at Sioux Ordnance Depot, leaves today for a 30 day leave before taking an assignment in Paris with the Foreign Liquidation Commission of the State Department. He reports to Washington September 15 for a five day instructional course. Mrs. Shook and their two children have moved to Bennington Vermont.
J C Swinbank, secretary of the Nebraska Grain Improvement Association, reports 1947 seed wheat test plots show 53.8 percent of 1,131 farm samples suitable for seed, up from 45.3 percent in 1946. Panhandle plots yield 47.6 percent good seed, central 49.6 percent, eastern 66.9 percent. rye mixtures threaten seed quality, especially in western counties at 24.9 percent, central 13.6 percent, eastern 6.1 percent.
Everett L. Hoover, Salvation Army fund drive chair, reports a good return and urges early response. The Salvation Army Home and Hospital for Unmarried Mothers in Omaha aided 241 girls and women last year, offering seclusion, social case work, healing, and Christian guidance. Weekly Creighton University–led clinics provide medical care, prenatal and postpartum services, with adoption help for babies when needed. Fees are minimal or waived, and more girls have entered the home in recent years, supported by Omaha women’s Nursery Committee.
Thom A B Ditton Vicar of Christ Episcopal Church told Lions Club members two paths face the United States in its Russia relations. Either pursue democratic world leadership to rally allies against Communism or counter with military force. He argued Russia’s satellite policy traces to Peter the Great and stressed U S advantage in power and economy, noting media and Congress feed anti communism. He recalled European experiences by life in England to explain U S Russia misunderstandings.
Rain halted the 4th annual show by The Lodgepole Valley Saddle Club at the county fair after 4:30 p.m. Despite wet grounds, horses from three states competed in 4-H, racing, rope, and pleasure classes with multiple victors led by Walter Hammond and Jack Angel. Some main events were rained out, but the U S Army jumping team from Ft Robinson and the Panhandle Patrol Drill Team added color to the event.
Union Pacific has placed major orders for rail equipment. Sixteen hundred box cars cost six million dollars and ten diesel locomotives cost about one and a half million. Additional orders include 500 automobile cars 1 400 hopper cars and 5 000 refrigerator cars for Pacific Fruit Express in collaboration with Southern Pacific.
Advertisers who bought space in the Cheyenne County directory must send or call their copy into The Telegraph Printing Co. office promptly. Copy received by this weekend will speed the book’s layout. otherwise another round of calls may be needed. Circulation is expected in October. The Sidney census is under way and nearing completion.
Rain loomed over the final day of the county fair as officials eyed clouds that gathered by noon. The rodeo was set for two, calf catching contest planned, and forecasters projected temperatures in the 80s. Officials said events would proceed unless heavy rain arrives.
Bob Spearow's shorthorn calf is grand champion at the county fair, with top honors also going to blue ribbon entries by Bob Hawkins Harold Dean Brogren and Kenneth McMillan. Other divisions saw winners in Hereford Angus and hog contests with showmanship honors noted and a complete list to be published Tuesday.
Fifteen leading wheat counties in western Nebraska report that only one third of needed freight cars are available to move the crop. For the week ending July 31 the projected yield across these counties is 31,518,000 bushels, with 12,045,000 needed for transport and 14,938,000 yet to be harvested. About 685,000 bushels were on the ground on farms and 50,000 on the ground at rail heads. Shippers received 629 cars. 1,936 cars were required. Brule noted 35 trucks daily to ease the car shortage.
Mrs. Elizabeth Morrow 75 wife of Edward Morrow of Potter died suddenly after being stricken early Wednesday evening. She had lived in Potter nineteen years. Details on her life were unavailable and a fuller account will appear Tuesday. The Craig Home for Funerals is handling arrangements which were not complete last night.
The 1947 Cheyenne County Fair ends with record crowds across the grounds. Wednesday night fireworks and vaudeville topped prior highs, while rodeo and horse shows drew strong patronage. 4-H exhibits impressed the county agent and fair officials noted the need for permanent grandstand enlargement for next year.
I B Downs was elected fire chief by the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department at the annual meeting last week. He succeeds W W Schulz who accepted the position after the death of Sol Winis. Bob Clark Arnold Braasch and Herschel Greever named assistant chief. Li L Pigditt new president Wendell Boyd vice president Clarence Hansen secretary treasurer and Harvey Vizina named to the board of trustees.
The dinner card party scheduled at Sidney Country Club for Thursday August 38 has been postponed until a later date. The house committee will set a definite date and announce it within the next couple of weeks.
