Sidney Man Dies After 27 Years Here
Charles Benton Mathews Jr., 54, longtime Sidney resident, died Monday night after an illness that forced his early summer retirement. Born in Springfield Indiana, he came to Sidney in 1909 to work for the Union Pacific and remained with the railroad until May. He married Margaret Treinen on August 23, 1910, and five children Daniel, Mary, Charles, Harold and Margaret survive with his widow. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church with Rev. Anton Link officiating. burial followed in the Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers were Ernest Jaeckel, Ernest Werden, Carl Mahr, Ray Wellner, George Fahy and Al Benish.

The 103000 street improvement project in Sidney is one of 23 Nebraska PWA projects delayed by a Washington ruling that labor must come from WPA rolls. Powerful Lights Illuminate Sidney Frontier Premiere
Two flood lights, each 93 million candle power, flashed from in front of the Fox theatre in Sidney. They drew attention over a 50 mile radius and were visible as far as 150 miles.
