Fair opens as heat ends and interchange plan fades

Sidney City Council dropped a public hearing on a proposed I 80 interchange south of Sidney due to little public interest. The panel also addressed traffic changes at El Rancho Road and Solano Drive, road naming, and fair preparations with rain easing heat ahead of Cheyenne County Fair events.

Longshoremen Leader Sends Open Letter to Farmers

The International Longshoremen's Association head says dockworkers refuse to load Russia bound grain until safeguards protect US food prices. ILA president Thomas W Gleason asks Russians to disclose future US grain purchases to farmers. The letter was sent through all 50 state governors as part of efforts to seek economic relief amid detente.

Sidney school board backs study of pep club

The Sidney Board of Education approved budget amendment of 50000 to move state funds for Educational Service Unit 14 services to handicapped children. They also accepted Diane Heck’s resignation, named Jane Montgomery as successor, reviewed teacher extra duty pay study results, approved leasing space at St Patrick's High School for a remedial reading program, and heard Wilbert Higuchi present the new science curriculum to be tested next year.

School Board reviews Junior High and Senior High Pep Club costs

The Parents Advisory Council reports high cheerleader costs for uniforms clinics and travel. Senior High uniforms totaled 175 each plus 60 for clinics, Junior High outfits 144 each. Members pay dues of 15 and many sew their own skirts. Overnight trips may be reimbursed for meals and lodging. Pep club membership fell from 96 to about 50 60. Board to oversee the program with a cross group committee.

All Nebraska NCIP deadline set for Sept 2

Lincoln announces the Sept 2 cutoff for submitting All Nebraska Community questionnaires as part of the NCIP. Sidney earned first place in the 5 000 to 50 000 population class last year and communities are evaluated across 14 categories from airport improvement to water supply. Each entrant receives a written category evaluation and a certificate noting completed All Nebraska standards.
