Cheyenne County voters will go to polls Tuesday August 15 to cast ballots in party primaries. Polls open at noon and close at 9 pm. Republicans face contests for county treasurer sheriff and clerk while Democrats have no primary races.
At Sidney Nebraska on August 8 1911 the Cheyenne County Board reviewed plans for the new courthouse jail by Fall River Company and awarded jail cage relocation to Jull Cook for 2500 and cage section installation to E E Goodhand for 75. H D Moore named superintendent with pay four dollars per day. Several claims were audited including pauper care payments, autopsy bills, and road district expenses. Meeting adjourned to August 19 1911.
Mrs. D A Barnhart receives a letter from her brother Frank Moore in Fairbanks Alaska dated July 10 expressing interest in mining there. He also sent the Fairbanks Daily News Miner issue of June 22 noting strawberries at 2.25 per box and the paper’s 25 cent subscription or two dollars monthly.
From Ord Nebraska contractor C E Goodhand has started men to dig the foundation for the new courthouse. Graders arrived Wednesday and progress is steady. Brick work to begin in about a week. Headquarters set in the sheriff's office in the old courthouse.
V. F. Kucera is awarded the contract for the new Court House. His two sons plan to do the hauling work, arranging to assist in the project.
The School Board met Tuesday night with members elect Bentley and Fundingsland. Schroeder's resignation was accepted and Leroy Martin chosen to succeed him. The school house will be cleaned and painted and two new showers installed, one for the girls.
M Ahrens, back from an Iowa journey, reports fine clamming and fishing near his lands. A fresh water pearl found in clam catch drew a local jeweler’s seventy five dollar offer but is believed to be worth more. He also shipped several cattle cars with prices good enough to send bank drafts to The First National Bank where he is a major stockholder.
Dr Bilon, renowned eye specialist, will be at the Metropolitan Hotel for a one day only appearance this Saturday August 12 offering consultations and examinations.
Sidney faced its first hail storm of the season Sunday afternoon around two o clock. Heavy rain accompanied the hail as large stones pelted streets with a rushing sound, delivering merciless blows to anyone caught outside.
Albert Thompson and his wife, residing on north half of section 34-1649, were in Sidney Thursday to transact business. Thompson boasted a "fine field" of potatoes grown from Rose seedlings. He brought 400 pounds of potatoes to town, a quantity that surprised the natives.
John Barnhart formerly of this city now manages Utah Milling Co Ogden. At the Utah State Millers and Grain Dealers Convention held recently in Ogden he was elected secretary. John is a Sidney High School graduate making good.
The U P's Sidney area sees a pickup in fruit trade over the past week and a half. Kirkpatrick Brothers shift operations to Merino Colorado while Charles Campbell joins Merino. Local rail workers and managers attend dinners and staff changes, with Cheyenne County crops described as broadly favorable despite slower corn growth.
Mrs. Bertha Neubauer a nurse from St Luke's Hospital in Denver will remain through the fall to assist Mrs Ellis with patients at the hospital continuing care at the Denver facility.
The will of Peter Neslund was probated before Judge Gap en on Wednesday with John W. Harper appointed executor. Wm L Moline was arrested Thursday for obstructing the Union Pacific Railroad by removing bolts and tampering with signal apparatus at Potter and pleaded guilty before County Judge Gapen. He awaits sentence in District Court.
A group of twelve couples from Sidney rode by hay-rack to Krueger's Lake Monday night for an informal dance. The girls provided lunch while a phonograph supplied music and Harriet Radcliff acted as chaperone.
Saturday April 5 marked Gertrude Brewer’s eighth birthday with a party hosted by Gertrude Culkins Lois Zinnecker Oma Freda Brown Dorothy Wright Lucy Hiett and Bernice Williams. Guests enjoyed games a dainty dinner and an afternoon auto ride.
A heavy cloud moved through Saturday afternoon near Sid ney leaving damage southwest of the area. Hail damaged crops, water reached a foot deep on the prairie between Padroni and Winston, and later storms affected land east and west of the railroad. Chickens died as floodwaters rushed through hills. E C Simmons deputy state surveyor arrived from Lincoln to survey township 13 range 51 amid disputes over original township corners and county road line issues in Cheyenne County.
In Sidney Nebraska on August 10, 1911 the Rebekah Lodge No. 66 expresses sympathy for the family of Joseph W Nelson. The resolutions note his loss as a cheerful and helpful member and promise to ease the pain and cheer the remaining loved ones. A copy of the resolutions will be sent to the family and filed in lodge minutes. Committee: Anna Hower Alice Mann Myrtle Lancaster.
M. W. Osborn has returned to Sidney from Alliance and will resume the paper-banging and painting business.
